The dining room is a place in the home that evokes many fond memories, whether it is the pleasure of a holiday meal or welcoming family and friends for a warm get together. Many feel that a dining room should leave a favourable impression of the owner’s hospitality, with a sense of style and class that is second to none. If a homeowner is considering redoing their dining room, here are simple suggestions to follow in order to achieve the desired result. You can create the dining room that is not simply a place for sharing meals, but one for making those cherished long term memories to reflect upon over the years.

What Fits Your Needs

First, you should choose the dining room set that is right for your needs, whether you are looking for a more formal or casual setup. Of course, you’ll want to first find the quality table that best suits your long-term needs. In smaller areas, a round dining table may be more appropriate, so as to not overwhelm the space and still be comfortable. Larger areas can accommodate a more traditional rectangular dining room table. If more seating will be necessary occasionally, purchase a table with extra leaves. Fine wood tables provide a traditional look, while glass ones give off a more modern impression. The coordinated chairs can be designed from fine wood or upholstery, depending on personal taste and care requirements.

Embellishing the Dining Area

With careful planning, a dining room can set the unique ambiance for that perfect meal by including proper accents. Think of the window treatments that are best suited for your dining room. For formal areas, heavier window treatments are the norm, though lighter ones may be used in a more casual setting. Deeper hues of paint provide a more elegant impression, while neutral colours exhibit a sleek appeal. Formal dining rooms look elegant with a high end rug placed under the table to add a designer touch. These should be approximately the same size as the table and not distract from the composition of the dining chairs. Also decide on the table settings that will aesthetically compliment the colour and décor of the room in general. Proper lighting is essential to set the mood, which can be achieved with a stylish chandelier with a dimmer switch. Candles and flowers work great as centerpieces for the table, while framed art or mirrors are always a nice finishing touch.

Other Accessories to Consider

To complete their dining picture, you may also want to consider wall units to compliment the formal setting. Buffets and hutches are perfect for storing fine china, silver and crystal. They can also be used to create displays in your dining room that will accent central furniture pieces. Wall units can be open or have glass doors, if desired. Many allow for lighting to provide emphasis on special focal points. One may choose to use these to exhibit fine dining ware, art, literature, collectables, treasured photographs, floral arrangements and more. Wall units make an especially nice addition for dining rooms with large, bare walls or high ceilings, adding just the right touch of warmth and variety to complete the total dining experience.

What in the world happened to the dining room? Sure, many houses still have a room that is called the dining room, but often times these rooms are nothing more than a room that sits there collecting dust. The idea of a sit down dinner with family and friends seems to be outdated. If you are interested in having some interesting time together with family and friends, it’s time to get out the feather duster, clean that dining room and add a spark to the design. Everyone appreciates a nice formal dinner every now and then, and if you plan on adding this to your entertainment schedule, you want to be sure that you do it right. Here are 5 simple ideas to make the dining room interesting again.

Buy a new table cloth and linens. You’ll be pleasantly surprised what a big difference a new tablecloth can do for your dining room. Spend some money though, don’t go cheap. Buy something that you like, with a little colour in it. The idea is that the table is the center of the room; you want to have some colour that draws attention to the center.

Speaking of centers, while you are purchasing your new tablecloth, get a new vase to put fresh cut flowers in. Try to coordinate it with the new colours you are bringing into the room. Nothing makes guests feel more at ease than some lovely, fresh flowers in the center of the table.

Have a new chandelier light installed. As you know, lighting sets the mood for a room. Inadequate lighting makes a dining room unbearable. Get a nice one. The idea with the dining room is not to do it on a tight budget. Your aim is to make the room a special place that makes people feel comfortable. No one wants to eat dinner in a room that lacks adequate lighting. If you can get the chandelier on a dimmer switch, that is the best option.

Bring out the good dishes, even when you are not eating on them. Many people keep their good dishes locked away for no one to ever see. Put full place settings out in the dining room to make it look like a room that people actually eat in. This might sound strange, but having places set makes the room more approachable.

Add some new colour to the walls. Now that you have everything done as far as the table is concerned, begin to look at the new colour themes you have brought into the room. Use one of the secondary colours on the tablecloth as a highlight colour to faux paint into your dining room walls. Faux painting gives dining rooms the illusion of textures on the walls and can help to hide flaws.

These five simple steps will cost a little bit of money. It will be worth every dime, though, once the family is sitting down for dinner together again. Now you just have to adjust the calendar so everyone has time for meals in the dining room.

Dining rooms used to be considered the centerpiece of design. Every night was an occasion for households in decades gone by. As we’ve moved into the fast-paced information age, it seems that sit down dinners in the dining room are becoming a thing of the past. Hosts that take the time to design an inviting dining room can leave an impression that no one will soon forget. There are a lot of routes you can take with dining room design, but it all centers around one thing – a beautiful dining room table. You will want to build your dining room theme around the table, but there are so many types it can be hard to decide which one is for you. Here are some tips to help you make your decision.

Before you do anything, check the dimensions of your dining room. You don’t want a table that is so large that guests feel crammed in. You also don’t want to go too small either, small tables lack adequate room for dinner guests to enjoy their meals.

Decide on a rounded shape or a rectangular shape. This will be a very crucial design element. If you go for a rounder table, unless the room is extremely roomy, it is suggested that you go with an oblong table. This allows adequate room between diners. Remember that the shape of your table is going to affect the rest of your furniture choices, so go with the shape that best complements your other furnishing choices.

Finally, decide upon what types of materials you want to use. There are a whole range of post-modern designs available in clear glass or marble tops. We suggest going back to pure wood for your dining room. You can use any shade that you like, but darker woods like oak, while expensive, add an air of formality and comfort that are sorely lacking in many of the more modern table designs.

It may take some time to pick just the right table, but this choice is crucial to the design path you will take with the rest of the room. Take your time and choose the right dining room table, and base your decorating theme around that. The dining room may not get used every night, since many of us have such hectic schedules, but taking the time to redesign this neglected room can allow for some relaxing and refreshing family sit down dinners. Wouldn’t that be a nice change of pace?
