The dining room is a place in the home that evokes many fond memories, whether it is the pleasure of a holiday meal or welcoming family and friends for a warm get together. Many feel that a dining room should leave a favourable impression of the owner’s hospitality, with a sense of style and class that is second to none. If a homeowner is considering redoing their dining room, here are simple suggestions to follow in order to achieve the desired result. You can create the dining room that is not simply a place for sharing meals, but one for making those cherished long term memories to reflect upon over the years.

What Fits Your Needs

First, you should choose the dining room set that is right for your needs, whether you are looking for a more formal or casual setup. Of course, you’ll want to first find the quality table that best suits your long-term needs. In smaller areas, a round dining table may be more appropriate, so as to not overwhelm the space and still be comfortable. Larger areas can accommodate a more traditional rectangular dining room table. If more seating will be necessary occasionally, purchase a table with extra leaves. Fine wood tables provide a traditional look, while glass ones give off a more modern impression. The coordinated chairs can be designed from fine wood or upholstery, depending on personal taste and care requirements.

Embellishing the Dining Area

With careful planning, a dining room can set the unique ambiance for that perfect meal by including proper accents. Think of the window treatments that are best suited for your dining room. For formal areas, heavier window treatments are the norm, though lighter ones may be used in a more casual setting. Deeper hues of paint provide a more elegant impression, while neutral colours exhibit a sleek appeal. Formal dining rooms look elegant with a high end rug placed under the table to add a designer touch. These should be approximately the same size as the table and not distract from the composition of the dining chairs. Also decide on the table settings that will aesthetically compliment the colour and décor of the room in general. Proper lighting is essential to set the mood, which can be achieved with a stylish chandelier with a dimmer switch. Candles and flowers work great as centerpieces for the table, while framed art or mirrors are always a nice finishing touch.

Other Accessories to Consider

To complete their dining picture, you may also want to consider wall units to compliment the formal setting. Buffets and hutches are perfect for storing fine china, silver and crystal. They can also be used to create displays in your dining room that will accent central furniture pieces. Wall units can be open or have glass doors, if desired. Many allow for lighting to provide emphasis on special focal points. One may choose to use these to exhibit fine dining ware, art, literature, collectables, treasured photographs, floral arrangements and more. Wall units make an especially nice addition for dining rooms with large, bare walls or high ceilings, adding just the right touch of warmth and variety to complete the total dining experience.

Spring is in full-bloom and summer is just around the corner. If you’ve been cooped up this winter, you are probably considering spending some time outside on the patio. Barbeques and outdoor games in the backyard quickly turn the patio into the summer time center of attention. Don’t think that home design is restricted to the inside rooms. Think of your patio as an outdoor room that deserves a style all its own. Your summer will be more enjoyable by doing a little bit of design work to make your patio stylish and fun.

Choose a Design

Some people choose to get really radical with their patio design and may install a new deck, or a new paving stone design to the ground. Both of those are great ideas, but are very large scale, involved projects. Once you have those things done, or if you are just trying to add a little pep to what you already have, choose a good design theme. There are a lot of themes to choose, from Mediterranean to Moroccan, and everything in between. You don’t have to go overboard, though. A simple consideration of colour and design can make any patio design affordable and easy.

Think About Plants

A good idea is to make proper use of attractive plants on and around your patio. Choosing the right kind of plants can help you make other design choices down the road. Many home owners get into a one plant scheme, and this is fine for a nice uniform look. But if you really want to make it interesting, vary the landscaping plants you choose. Throw in some fountain grasses at various spots to create contrasting heights. Another great idea is to get a large pot and fill it with water to grow some water lilies. A water garden or two can really make your patio an interesting place to visit.

Furniture…Finally

The finishing touches of your patio design should be great, comfortable furniture. Just like your interior decorating, keep texture, colour, style, and price concerns balanced when picking patio furniture. And don’t forget comfort. You will probably be entertaining people, so don’t skimp. Get rid of the $5 plastic chairs and tables, and pick out some nice furniture that complements the other design elements of your patio design.

Keep these things in mind as you design your patio. Create and oasis that friends and family will love. The patio is like the summer time family room, so put some real design thoughts and work into your project.
