You can discover ways to select a color palette and learn the various tricks to making your ideas into a complete design. You can also learn different techniques for choosing the best furniture layout for a room. Some sites are even geared towards those looking to take an e-course on interior design. Online decorating Internet sites make decorating a fun and easy interactive experience.

1. Websites to Help You Decorate

Designmyroom.com takes interior decorating to the highest level. The web site offers a free interior design application where you can start with a blank canvas and add various design ideas, color schemes, furniture, artwork and more. Another popular Internet site is HGTV.com which features an array of photographs, decorating tips and budget-friendly makeover ideas. Visitors to the site can even get advice on landscaping, home improvement projects, and organizational tips.

2. Save Money

Utilizing the Internet to create your own home decorating themes can save you money and time, and because you get to select the materials and colors of your own choosing your space becomes more personal. Interior decorators can be costly, and their vision for a particular room in your home may not always match your own. Tackling an interior decorating job on your own can help you to stay within budget, and you get to enjoy the feeling of accomplishment once the room is completed.

3. Decorating Articles

The Internet has a host of the most popular trends in interior design. If you’re looking to see what the hottest colors of the season are or what the latest furniture trends are, you’re sure to find it on the web. Nobody wants to decorate with last year’s decorating themes, and an Internet search of articles and blogs can give you an idea of current home design trends, what’s hot and what’s not, when it comes to putting together a room in your home.

4. Interior Design Stores

When it comes time to look for furnishings for a room, the web has a fantastic selection of items to choose from and all within your budget. Whether you’re looking for upper end products or budget-friendly merchandise, you’ll have numerous sites to choose from such as artismo.com (selling a variety of art and decor) and elledecor.com/design-decorate/ideas/interior-design-resources (this site actually provides you with a list of online stores offering various home products and furnishings). Many home decorating web sites can even offer suggestions on particular pieces, i.e. a jungle themed rug for your den or colorful vase for your dining room, and where to they can be found.

5. Home Decorating Software

Decorating software allows you to change around the furniture in your room without having to lift a finger. You can also check the layout of a floor plan and change it around if it doesn’t work. There are even software programs that are designed to see what a room looks like when you add the paint, furniture, artwork and other accessories. Think of the time and back aches this could save.

Decorating a home can be a challenging job, and the exciting possibilities of colors, artwork, and furnishings may seem overwhelming. The Internet has a bevy of ideas and tips to make the process of interior design easy and fun. It can turn the experience of just throwing a room together into that of creating a space that looks like it came off the pages of a magazine.

Author’s Bio

Molly Pearce is also a freelance artist who enjoys tweaking the interior design of her Atlanta apartment and studio. She is a contributor for Artismo, an online resource for custom-framed artwork that is priced affordably and can be delivered right to your doorstep. They provide you with the convenience of choosing artismo.com canvas or paper prints sized and framed to your liking. Each piece also has the “Made in America” promise. This means it has been carefully assembled and packaged with local materials at one central U.S. workshop.

The kitchen is typically given the most consideration and for good reason: it’s the gathering place for friends and family. When designing your kitchen, it’s important to give a great deal of thought to your appliances. Because of their expense, doing your research before you buy will pay off in the long run.

What Do You Need?

It may seem incredibly basic, but you’d be surprised at the number of new home owners that design their kitchen only to find out that they haven’t left enough room for all of the appliances that they want. Take the time to map out what appliances you will really use in your new kitchen. You’ll need the two essentials: a range and a refrigerator. Beyond the essentials, your choices are vast. From microwaves to wine coolers; from dishwashers to counter top grills, you can find dozens of appliances designed to make your life easier.

Style

Do you want a traditional, homey kitchen or a more sleek and modern one? You can find appliances that will suit your style, no matter what that style is! Fitted or built-in appliances, as the name suggests, fit into your cabinetry, giving your kitchen a seamless look. Free-standing or portable appliances are easily moved should you decide to rearrange your kitchen in the future.

Colour

The most popular colours for appliances are by far white, black and stainless steel. No matter what colour you prefer, purchasing all of your appliances in the same colour will give your kitchen a pulled together look. Stainless steel tends to give kitchens a modern look while black and white can lend themselves to all manner of kitchen styles.

Remember that stainless steel and black appliances will cost more money than the same style in a white or bisque finish. If you trust yourself with a can of paint, home improvement stores sell special appliance paint that can transform white appliances into virtually any colour you desire. This may be an option for those wanting higher-end appliances with the not so high cost.

Budget Concerns

You can easily spend tens of thousands of dollars on appliances for your kitchen. If you choose to outfit your kitchen with the latest in appliance design, you should expect to pay anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 for each appliance. If you are on a tighter budget, consider buying appliances without some of the bells and whistles or choosing the appliance that is the most important to you and splurging on that one.

For instance, if you do a lot of cooking and baking, you may want to concentrate your budget on a top-of-the-line range. If you have a large family, you may want to buy a refrigerator with several compartments, LED lighting and an in-door water and ice dispenser. Decide on a budget for your appliances and then sit down and decide which appliances are the most important to you and how you will divvy your budget among them.

When designing your new kitchen, don’t forget to consider your appliances. From colour to style to budget, there are a number of things to think about when choosing appliances for your kitchen. Do your research, shop around for the best price and you’ll soon have the kitchen of your dreams.

When guests walk into your home, do they think they’ve stepped backwards through time? If so, you may be interested in the latest interior decorating trends. When it comes to furniture, styles change, and for 2012, they have changed dramatically.

Here are the trends you should be aware of when redecorating your domicile:

1. Television Stands

Modern, angular television stands are making a comeback. When flat screen televisions were released, the trend was to ditch the stand and hang the television on the wall like a piece of art. Take your flat panel screen off of the living room wall and give it a piece of furniture to sit on!

New television stands look like real furniture. The new stands have drawers, places to store components and are taller than their decades-old relatives. You can find stands in modern hues like purple, blue, red and green or in traditional finishes like brown, black and white.

2. Console Loveseats

Have you ever walked into a friend’s home only to be stricken green with envy at their large, over-stuffed console sofa? If you have a small space, you no longer have to be jealous of your friend’s huge living room! Console loveseats are not only perfect for small spaces, but are ultra-affordable.

With storage consoles, cup holders, head-rests and plush cushions, you can relax in comfort, even if your living room leaves something to be desired when it comes to square footage. Look for fabrics in rich colours and patterns or go for more masculine styles in leather or wool.

3. Multifunctional Pieces

Look for furniture that can perform double-duty. Ottomans that open to reveal storage compartments, sleek storage beds that eliminate the need for added dressers, cupboards and chests and comfortable sofas that can double as a guest bed are all great choices. Rather than cluttering your home with dozens of pieces, choose a few modern, multifunctional pieces. Cluttered is out, sleek and modern is in!

4. Materials

Your choice of materials is wide open this year. Walk into any furniture store and there is literally something for everyone. You’ll find upholstery in leather, houndstooth, microfiber and organic cotton. Rather than choosing prints, consider solid materials in bold colours and accent your furniture with throws, pillows and cushions.

Look for materials that are easy to clean and durable. Avoid fabrics treated with Teflon and furniture coated with high-VOC finishes. The trend in materials is to go organic and eco-friendly. These materials are better for both your health and the environment.

5. Colour

Colour is king this year. From walls to furniture, bold splashes of colour reign supreme. Monochromatic looks are the most modern and can lend visual appeal to any room. Paint your walls in a bold hue, select neutral furniture and highlight your room with shades of the colour you’ve selected for your walls.

If you aren’t ready to saturate your home with colour, consider neutral shades for your walls, keep to the same tone with your furniture and add splashes of colour with your accessories. The trend in colour is leaning towards single colours in multiple hues, giving your home an ultra-modern feel.

Trends change and if these aren’t striking your fancy, you can always wait until next year. Remember: your home is yours. It’s a place that should make you feel comfortable when you enter it. Following the trends can be fun, but your home should also suit your personality. No matter how you choose to redecorate, make sure your home is your oasis!

Every personal living space is prime real estate for creating a personal oasis. Tips to elevating the mood of your home can start with makeover plan basics.

Physical Space Inventory

The physical space of a home includes room layouts, room contents, room functions and room personalities. The home as a whole may or may not have an overall personality, including over-aching themes or moods.

Draw a simple diagram depicting each room’s layout. Jot down on a pad or use software to inventory the general contents of each room. Consider taking one or more photos of each room. For each room, besides inventorying its contents, characterize the room itself, its personality.

Consider how the room is used now and what type of atmosphere currently exists.

Personal Inventory

Each occupant of the living space has his or her own style, personality and sensibility. The personalities of the occupants of a room can factor into making personal living spaces more personal and meaningful.

Unique information about household members includes observations about the person, and how the room occupants engage the space. Observe room contents and use. What makes the occupants happy? Include favourite music, photos, genres, books, fragrances, and activities.

Living Harmony

Develop objectives to make living space more upbeat by using inventories, queries and incorporating Earth principles to harmonize elements. Earth, wind, fire and water are often associated with natural design elements.

Humans and animals are also a part of the Earth balance. The five senses of people can be critical principles when strategizing for an uplifting room makeover. Engage all five senses or a handful of design principles to create an uplifting experience.

Mirror outdoors with natural elements, colours, patterns, textures, and sounds. Natural browns, greens, blues, flower colours, vegetation, animal prints, and assorted fabrics are useful references. Blue is considered a universally soothing colour, for example, while red is considered more exciting. This information can be used with knowledge gleaned from household inventories.

Birds, cats, dogs, fish, rabbits, gerbils and other animals, which can be kept indoors or outdoors, are natural elements of Earth balance. Balconies or patios can be welcoming locations for bird feeders and wind chimes.

The selection of rugs, curtains, wall paper, furnishings, and accents can appeal to the five senses when enhancing home mood. A shag blue rug can provide an outdoorsy uplifting affect, while appealing to the senses of sight and touch. Adding a mirror provides silver “sky” and water elements. Adding greenery such as live, flowering, fragrant or citrus plants to the home can blend Earth and sensory elements.

Vases, chandeliers, lighting, glassware, wall decor, clocks, and candle holders can tune up mood. Indoor rainbows include colorful decorating, accent splashes, and stained glass to blend water and colour earthiness. A glass candy dish filled with classic or colourful mints, gummy bears, or potpourri can excite the senses. Floral or other arrangement can produce the same affect. Artificial arrangements with colourful glass beads in a vase can be sprayed with room freshener, or stems dipped in essential oil such as lavender, citrus or eucalyptus.

A brown leather recliner near favourite reading material interplays uplifting elements. Add a tabletop crystal, window element, fish tank, and shag accent rug.

Place scents around the home in sachets, under couches, within pillows or cases, and under beds. Sprinkle lavender scented powder on carpet before vacuuming. Spray fan blades with essential oil or freshener before using.

Chimes, waterfalls, and crystal or glass music boxes are sound generators with earthy touches and visual appeal. Match music to what uplifts listeners.

With 2011 just around the corner it seems like the perfect time to be thinking about which new trends the New Year will bring. A new year always heralds a new vogue, so what will these trends turn out to be over the next coming months? For those of you too impatient to wait, below are what the experts are saying will be key styles throughout the next year.

A decade of the millennium is over, and high end design and contemporary furniture is quickly transporting us into the future, with shining chromes, clean lines and bright whites. There are several key trends that are going to be characteristic in the next year, all of which will add style and elegance to your home.

One of these trends for 2011 is the Lustre trends, which will certainly bring your everyday items into a new decade and add contemporary class to your home. This particular trend is about adding shine and polish to everyday items. TV cabinets, storage units and tables will be glossy and reflective, designed in luminous chromes and silvers. This gives a clean and shining appearance to your living space.

Another key trend for 2011 is colour, the bolder and brasher, the better. The twist on bringing colour into your home in 2011 is that the colour is not limited to key pieces of furniture such as sofas, tables or accessories. Colour in 2011 is meant to inject some fun and unpredictability into your living space. Previously unnoticed objects such as storage boxes and cabinets are streaked with bright and bold blues, oranges and pinks so that colour is used in new and unique ways that makes perfectly functional items, though not key style pieces, become the new focus of your living space.

In contrast to these splashes of bright colour, whites will be a large part of key design trends in 2011. This trend is characterized by expansive white furniture against clean white walls, with the focus again on glossy shines and crisp lines. Once more, complimenting your furniture styles with matching wall colour is changing traditional design rules and bringing us into the future of contemporary design. Also with this trend, mix whites with chromes for a bright, unpolluted feel.

This trend works well when incorporated with others. If one trend is fully followed throughout your home, it may result in a linear style that lacks personality. The key to good design is to incorporate your own character and flair to each trend.

Probably the greatest quest for any home decorator is trying to make a room appear larger. Let’s face it, we all want the spaces in our house to appear roomier. There are a lot of techniques that decorators use but there is one all-important tip that is a sure-fire way to make any room appear more spacious. It is deceptively simple and easy to pull off, and can produce dramatic results.

Think Monochromatic

The concept of a monochromatic room makes some people cringe. They immediately start to picture their house looking like a set from a Stanley Kubrick film and get very nervous. Don’t worry, the effect will be dramatic, but not that over the top. The concept relies upon the fact that the more similar you can keep the colours in a room, the less of a visual break or distraction there is when looking at the room as a whole. The end result is a room that can appear much larger than it really is.

Very Easy To Do, But Hard To Commit To

Take a deep breath and think about the following steps. You don’t have to do them all, but the more you do, the better the effect will be.

Keep all the paints a very similar colour. This means if you are using a darker colour, you will not use ceiling white, but a shade that is similar to the wall colours. Keep all colours as similar as you can without getting too boring.

Furniture should also closely match the colours of the walls and ceilings. If you can’t afford to put in all new furniture, take a trip to the fabric store and make some throws for your furniture that matches the colour scheme of the room.

Get rid of anything extraneous. You don’t have to throw out family heirlooms, but if something doesn’t fit in with the colour scheme move it somewhere else where it is more welcome.

Eliminate as much extra or distracting colour from the room as you can. This means paintings, shelves and tables. If you must, use coverings and throws to cover furniture and make it match the room’s design.

Take before and after pictures. You won’t believe how this one tip (divided into several steps) makes any room appear much larger. It will take some adjustment, but if you are going for a bigger look, this is an easy way to pull it off.

You may not be David Copperfield or David Blair, but there are still a lot of tricks that you are capable of when it comes to interior design and style. Crafty decorators know that you have to use everything you can to your advantage to bring out the best in every room of the house. One of the great dilemmas in home décor is making a room appear more spacious. There are several approaches to the fine art of room enlarging illusions and each has pros and cons. What many people fail to recognize is the importance of the right lighting to make a room appear larger.

Light Catches Eyes

A very basic fact is that the human eye notices brightness. Exploiting this fact can make a cramped room look much larger in a flash. Just about every room is rectangular or square in shape. The key to the right lighting is to draw attention to the four corners of a room. Many rooms have one central light that does just the opposite; it draws attention to the center of a room. To avoid this, you should install lights in the corners to make the room appear bigger.

A Simple Job That You Can Do In an Hour

Instead of using more complicated schemes to make a room look larger, we are going to take a simpler route. Go to the store and buy four sets of identical track lighting. Install the lighting in each of the four corners of your room, and you are essentially done. The key is going to be the right time to use the lighting. If the natural lighting in a room is falling on the east side of that room, turn on the opposite side lights. If the entire room is poorly lit, crank on all four sets of lights.

You will be delighted when you see what a difference this simple little lighting trick makes. It may not be an illusion worthy of the stage, but it definitely serves its purpose well.

Getting in a rut can be a tiresome ordeal. Doing the same things, the same way all the time is not good for your creative side. That is why changing up styles in your home can be such a liberating experience; it’s a chance to do something new. If you are thinking about changing the style in your home, be sure that you don’t just move from one rut to another.

A lot of people begin new home decorating projects very excited, but quickly lose that fervour. What happens to dull their passion? One setback may be a huge set of home decorating “rules.” When new designers begin to read up on different design ideas, they hear professional stylists telling them, “Do this, but never do this…” It can be enough to make anyone nip their own creative impulses in the bud. Here are a couple of the “rules of design” that you can feel free to break.

Keep things symmetrical. This is nonsense. While a symmetrical room layout can be very inviting, it can also be very boring. Take chances with your design. Put things where you think they look best. Let your personality shine through. None of us are perfectly balanced people; so why should our rooms be perfectly balanced? Have a little fun!

Stick with one theme. Consistency is a great thing, but you don’t have to be bogged down by the limitations of one style over another. Feel free to add a little funk to a traditional country look with a post-modern painting or sculpture. Keep things interesting.

There are plenty of other, hard and fast rules that you can break as a designer. Be sure that you know the rules well, before you break them. If you are breaking rules, just to be breaking them, you are likely to end up with a stylistic nightmare. You want to use the breaking of the rules to make a style statement not to cause people to be uncomfortable. Remember it’s OK to be a fashion outlaw sometimes, you might just surprise yourself.

Nobody can deny that the economic downturn in recent times has ravaged everything on its path including spending on home décor. This is best illustrated by the conservative nature that seems to have crept in. Lavish extravagance on the home front is becoming very rare.

Still, overriding style statements in style trends these days are all headed in one direction. And that direction is best described as global styles.

It seems so fashionable and elegant these days to take international influences from far flung places to create a personalized, interesting and sometimes provocative décor in the home.

This trend is hardly surprising considering that we live in a global village, thanks mainly to easy and rapid global air travel and the World Wide Web. These both have helped a great deal in quietly promoting more travel around the world.

The result is that when home décor stylists seek international influences these days, no continent is spared. We all frequently come across Asian, Australian, European, African and American furniture trends in the home.

For instance, prints mainly portraying animals that can only be found in Africa have been popular for quite a while now. There is no denying that some pretty interesting things can be done with leopard and cheetah skin for example. These can be used both with antique and contemporary furniture in the home and still bring out some wonderful results in both extremes.

On many occasions animal prints have been used in conjunction with leather. It is fascinating how leather has taken a new prominent role as an ideal accent on wooden and fabric prices. Used in small dozes it tends to bring out the best in a wide variety of situations.

 Tweet This Post
