To add a distinguished new look in any kitchen, homeowners may want to consider replacing their existing countertops. Ceramic tiles and laminates are two popular choices, but for the ultimate in luxury, it’s hard to beat the quality and appeal of granite countertops. Though they may be the most expensive option available, they are designed to provide long term durability accompanied by genuine aesthetic appeal. Those considering granite will be please to learn that countertop maintenance is low, requiring only regular wiping, as well as occasional sealing and polishing to keep them looking their best. Various grade stone choices are available in thousands of colours to compliment any décor and colour scheme desired.

High quality

Its widely know that installing granite countertops can increase the home’s value upwards of 10%. The dense stone material utilized is highly valued because it is so hard to extract for commercial use. Granite is often found inside of other large rocks, amongst large rock piles. Heavy machinery is required to cut and move slabs. Another reason that granite increases home value is that it one of the strongest, densest materials on the market, with only diamonds being harder in the naturally occurring environment. The stone is also heat resistant, which allows one to place hot dishes on the surface without concern of permanent damage. Additionally, home buyers are increasingly attracted to the natural beauty of granite, which is smooth, lavish and available in a wide range of unique grains and patterns.

Choices

Your countertops may be outfitted with two different types of granite: consistent granite, which contains the same patterns on every piece, or variegated granite, which exhibits an assortment of colour streaks. Variegated granite provides distinct aesthetic appeal but is more difficult to find complementary pieces for a large surface. These countertops may contain a flat finish, which is smoother but less resistant to stains. Another option is a polished finish, which is glossy and more resistant to wear. Homeowners are advised to visit different warehouses and look at several slabs of the granite they are considering. Each piece is distinctive and this will give potential buyers a better idea of what they can expect from the finished result.

Installation

Kitchen countertop installation is a process that will require careful planning on the part of the homeowner, as well as the expertise of a professional. The installers will first need to make a template of the measurements necessary for the exact granite cuts. It’s crucial that these measurements be accurate, since altering the dimensions later will result in additional cost and labour. During the remodeling process, old countertops will need to be removed, as well as appliances such as sinks, faucets and dishwashers. Extra care must be utilized when handling the granite, as it is exceedingly heavy and impact could result in permanent damage.

When the weekend rolls around and it’s time to watch the latest movie or hook up the X-Box 360 for some serious gaming, the living room is where these things usually take place. If you have a spare room that is collecting dust and boxes of junk, clear it out and turn it into a high-tech entertainment room. You can keep a television in the living room for everyday viewing, but think about relocating all the really fun stuff to a room designated for good times.

Go For The Big Screen

The centerpiece of an entertainment room has to be a big plasma, or LCD screen TV. Prices on these sets have gone down in recent years, so you should be able to find some good deals. For an optimal entertainment experience, don’t go smaller than a 42 inch screen. This is on the smaller end for a really decked out entertainment room but it will work. Be sure to get a wall mounting kit to keep from having to set up a huge entertainment center because they are a huge waste of floor space that your entertainment room cannot afford to spare.

Bring In The Gear

Get all the peripherals hooked up to the TV. Bring in the home theatre system, the gaming systems and the computer. If you know how to hook electronics up get the PC hooked into the TV too. Get all the entertainment gear into place. Avoid the urge to bring in an entertainment center, utilize small tables or desks instead. A really cool idea is to hide the gear away in a closet that is set aside for clothing. Store your electronics gear in there instead. You can purchase simple all-in-one infrared systems with a control eye to ease the use of your gadgets.

Easy On The Furniture

Keep furnishings very basic and sparse. Two good theatre style chairs and a beanbag chair or two for visitors is plenty. It’s a good idea to have a few extra beanbag chairs available to bring in for company. Beanbag chairs are comfortable, easy to move, and provide a great retro feel to your entertainment room. By the time you’re done with this room, it may become the hotspot on the weekends for your friends and family.

Going to the movies is a fun experience that nearly everyone enjoys. Even when the movie is terrible, there’s nothing like getting out and experiencing a film on the big screen. One thing is for sure, though, it gets expensive going out to the movies. Many people are installing home theatre systems to get the best movie experience in the comfort of their own homes. This may sound like a daunting design project, but it is easier than you might think. There are some great systems available for reasonable prices that can have your home theatre open for business in no time at all.

Before you start buying electronics for your home theatre, decide on a design for the room. Setting up the room in true theatre style can be a fun way to add a little glitz and glamour to your home. Here are a few tips to get you going.

Theatre Style Furniture

Instead of going for a traditional living-room type set up, go full-out theatre style in your room design. This means setting up all seating so that it is facing toward the big-screen. How many rows you go will be limited only by your budget and the size of the room. Keep seating comfortable and dark coloured. There are theatre style chairs available that make you feel like you are sitting in the local cinema. These chairs can be expensive, but they are a great way to add an air of authenticity to your home theatre.

The Screen Set Up

The home theatre system can be expensive. There are many systems available that have everything in a box. These home theatre systems are not the most high-end systems, but they are a good way to get started with a home theatre system. Shop around – there are systems available from as cheap as $200 to a couple thousand dollars. Invest in a nice big screen that doesn’t overwhelm the whole room. These electronic costs are high, but they pay off when movie night rolls around.

Theatre Decoration

A good way to go with design is to keep the walls and flooring dark because you want to add to the ambience and make it like a real theatre. Also, think about getting some nice movie poster prints to hang up. Be sure to keep heavy picture frames and shelves out of the room. With a high-end sound system, too much clutter on the walls will vibrate and ruin the sound experience.

You’ll have friends and family lining up for movie night at your house. Be sure to keep snack and drink prices to a minimum. Lights, Camera, Action!
