Making improvements to your home can be very rewarding. The reward you receive should last you longer than the moment you complete it. There are many things that you can put into place to make sure that you have done things right so that you can continue to enjoy the efforts you have put forth.

Use the Right Materials

It can be tempting to use more economical products when undertaking a project around your home, but it may not be best for you in the long run. The saying, “you get what you pay for” is more correct than you think. If you are going to be putting in the labor in completing a project, you will want to enjoy it for years to come.
Look at what you buying and buy the products you need that will last you for as long as you need it to. For example, if you are painting a room that you know you will be painting again in the foreseeable future, there is not a need to purchase a lifetime kind of paint. On the flip side, if you are painting the exterior of your home, you probably do not want to be painting it again in a year or two, so get paint that is rated to last. Although getting quality products is a little more expensive on the front end, it will save you more than what you save in the future.

Do It Right the First Time

Cutting corners to get the job done faster is a very appealing thought when completing projects around your home. This would be a very bad choice on your part as you will most likely need to go back and fix what you didn’t do in the first place. If you do not know how to do a job, find someone who knows what they’re doing to assist you. If finding additional help is not an option for your project, do the necessary research in order to educate yourself. Check out your local home improvement stores to find out if they are doing any workshops that have to do with your current project or even for future projects. There are many people willing to provide you with the answers, all you have to do is ask.

Rebates and Returns

Often times when you are doing upgrades to your home, there are financial incentives available to you. If you are putting in new windows, there may be a rebate available from your power company. If you are upgrading to natural gas or upgrading your natural gas appliances, there may be a rebate available from the gas company. If you are replacing a toilet, there may be a rebate available from the water company. Not only that, the government occasionally offers rebates for energy efficient upgrades. In addition to rebates, you may be able to deduct these upgrades on your tax return. So, keep all of the receipts and ask your tax professional what you can write off so as to either reduce what you owe or to increase your return.
Thoroughly think through your household projects. Make sure that you are putting in the right materials and skills so that you don’t regret cutting corners in the future. Find out when the best time is to do these projects to make the best of them through rebates and returns. Reaping the rewards can be much more than enjoying the finished product.

To add a distinguished new look in any kitchen, homeowners may want to consider replacing their existing countertops. Ceramic tiles and laminates are two popular choices, but for the ultimate in luxury, it’s hard to beat the quality and appeal of granite countertops. Though they may be the most expensive option available, they are designed to provide long term durability accompanied by genuine aesthetic appeal. Those considering granite will be please to learn that countertop maintenance is low, requiring only regular wiping, as well as occasional sealing and polishing to keep them looking their best. Various grade stone choices are available in thousands of colours to compliment any décor and colour scheme desired.

High quality

Its widely know that installing granite countertops can increase the home’s value upwards of 10%. The dense stone material utilized is highly valued because it is so hard to extract for commercial use. Granite is often found inside of other large rocks, amongst large rock piles. Heavy machinery is required to cut and move slabs. Another reason that granite increases home value is that it one of the strongest, densest materials on the market, with only diamonds being harder in the naturally occurring environment. The stone is also heat resistant, which allows one to place hot dishes on the surface without concern of permanent damage. Additionally, home buyers are increasingly attracted to the natural beauty of granite, which is smooth, lavish and available in a wide range of unique grains and patterns.

Choices

Your countertops may be outfitted with two different types of granite: consistent granite, which contains the same patterns on every piece, or variegated granite, which exhibits an assortment of colour streaks. Variegated granite provides distinct aesthetic appeal but is more difficult to find complementary pieces for a large surface. These countertops may contain a flat finish, which is smoother but less resistant to stains. Another option is a polished finish, which is glossy and more resistant to wear. Homeowners are advised to visit different warehouses and look at several slabs of the granite they are considering. Each piece is distinctive and this will give potential buyers a better idea of what they can expect from the finished result.

Installation

Kitchen countertop installation is a process that will require careful planning on the part of the homeowner, as well as the expertise of a professional. The installers will first need to make a template of the measurements necessary for the exact granite cuts. It’s crucial that these measurements be accurate, since altering the dimensions later will result in additional cost and labour. During the remodeling process, old countertops will need to be removed, as well as appliances such as sinks, faucets and dishwashers. Extra care must be utilized when handling the granite, as it is exceedingly heavy and impact could result in permanent damage.

If you’re thinking about adding a room, or changing a room to fit another purpose, you should take some time to consider what you would really like to do with another room in your house. Depending on the particulars of your house, adding a room can be quite an expensive endeavour. If you’re thinking of doing any kind of remodelling you should familiarize yourself with the local building codes and any laws that may prohibit what you are thinking of doing to your home. If you live in a neighbourhood with a Homeowner’s Association, you will have to clear any outer changes to your house, including room additions.

Unless you have an architecture or construction design background you will need to hire somebody to design your new room. There are some contractors who include architectural design in their services but using an independent architect will give you better results. Architects supply blueprints, which are a must for builders and are a great way to show government agencies exactly what your building plans look like.

Since you are thinking of going to all the trouble of building an entirely new space attached to your home, you should try to consider every possible pro and con of the design and how the space might be used. You might want to go so far as to consider what furniture you would like to fit in the room. Is it going to be a play area for the children or the formal dining room you always wanted? It’s best to fill in all the pieces before construction begins.

Another option to throw on the table when considering a new room is green building construction. If you are a homeowner, it is worth considering the benefits of green building when you start thinking about plans to improve your home. This movement has a huge (and growing) public following and a number of construction companies are certified green builders. Taking this route means you will be worry free if the demand and price for resources like power and water continue to increase. For example, over time if solar panels are located in the right areas on your house/property, you can save hundreds of dollars on your electricity bill, thanks to this renewable resource.

Needless to say, looking into how you can make the newest addition to your home as environmentally friendly as possible is beneficial for you and the environment. You will have to weigh the cost/benefit ratio for yourself, your home, and your environment before coming to a decision. Although green technology is becoming more popular, it can be an expensive venture. Keep in mind though the benefit is it lowers long-term energy costs and in the end will save you money.

There are many options to consider when doing a remodel. Whichever way you decide to build your new addition to your home, make sure it works for you!

Increasing the appeal and value of your home when you are preparing it for sale or just giving it a face-lift is not as difficult as some people think it is. Here are five design secrets that will revamp your home and significantly increase its value.

Kitchen Renovations

A spacious kitchen is a big bonus and something that all homebuyers look for. For larger kitchen spaces, building a peninsular kitchen counter is a great way to augment countertop workspace.

But if your kitchen isn’t big, you can still enhance its functionality, by placing appliances such that they offer the greatest convenience in meal preparations. You should also create sufficient storage space for kitchen knick-knacks. You can also replace your old kitchen cabinets with oak, pine or any solid wood.

Bathroom Refurbishing

Replace the old tiles in your tub and shower area with new ones and revamp your bathroom floor with travertine, ceramic or sheet vinyl. You don’t have to buy expensive tiles and flooring material – hard-wearing products with a minimalist design can do the trick. Adding medicine cabinets in a sparse bathroom or changing your old wall paper will suitably refurbish your bathroom without costing you a small fortune.

Resurfacing Concrete

Resurfacing the worn out concrete around your house will lend your home a new look and make buyers take notice. In this regard you can:

Enhance the appearance of your driveway with a cobblestone finish

Give your old walkway a quaint brick look

Do up your patio with a smooth slate finish

Flooring Fixes

Homes with carpeted floors are viewed more positively by homebuyers while many real estate agents claim that most value is attached to hardwood floors. Carpeting is a more cost-effective option to hardwood- affordable and attractive carpeting can be an important factor in enhancing the appeal of your home.

Paint Job

This is a no-brainer but it is surprising how many homeowners compromise on the quality of the paint job. Fresh coats of paints with a two-coat paint job improve the appearance of your home. A tip with regard to paints is to use low or zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints that are environment-friendly. This will make your home more appealing to eco-conscious home buyers.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to revamping your home and adding to its value. Make sure that you approach your home remodeling and refurbishing process after careful research and budgeting.

Many homeowners wish they could just click their fingers to recreate the home of their dreams. Overall planning coupled with costs, time and energy required to add onto a home can be overwhelming. But rest assured, if you can imagine a different home, it can become a reality with the careful assistance of the right contractor and proper planning. Whatever the project, establishing good working relationships with the company that will transform your residence will make the journey worthwhile throughout the entire process. Experienced builders will be willing to listen and assist you in creating the personal home remodeling or room additions you are longing for, resulting in your ultimate satisfaction.

Remodeling

For your home remodel it is vital to contact a reputable home contractor to obtain portfolios of prior work and credible references. Your contractor can provide an estimate on the costs needed for the overall project to be completed. Make certain contracts cover all possible work to be done so there will not be any unwanted surprises. Save money by planning ahead and choosing products that will meet your requirements but not break the budget. Be aware that the longer it takes for a project to complete, the more costly it will be. Adding space and moving windows always increases the price tag. Determine if current heating and cooling systems can be accommodated in new rooms to save installing separate systems. It may also be more affordable to have work done in phases over time.

Home Design

Deciding on your home design can incorporate a number of factors according to what the budget is. Careful coordination with your contractor is essential to avoid unforeseen problems. Plans should be examined for efficiency and ability to blend with the existing structure. Choose everything from lights to fixtures prior to the onset of construction to prevent costly decisions later on. Keep a small reserve fund for unforeseen purchases. Focus on aesthetic appeal balanced with practical needs. While luxury fixtures and appliances may be desired, that money may be better spent on more basic amenities. Sometimes areas can be expanded to make them larger rather than adding extra space. Think of other ways to reduce expenses by changing parts of the interior of your home without the added cost of altering all structures, such as using paint and wallpaper, or visually creating the illusion of depth.

Bedroom Additions

Bedroom additions are one option for those looking to bring about extra room for their family needs and can also make a great idea for creating space for the future. A new bedroom will add considerable value to your home, making it a cost effective decision in the long run. Before adding an entire new room, decide if you can expand on a current space or remove walls to increase the size of an existing area to reduce costs. If the addition will be for adults, will a seating area or an adjoining bathroom be considered? For children, a window seat or play area might factor into the design process. As with any remodeling plan, be mindful of realistic choices to keep your project in line with your allotted budget.

With more and more homeowners looking to go “green”, it is no surprise that more companies are making green products for the kitchen. If you are looking to do a bit of remodeling in the kitchen, or just want a more planet-friendly kitchen in general, the following list of must-haves will help you get started in the right direction:

Water-saving kitchen faucet

One simple and easy way to reduce the amount of water that goes down your kitchen sink is to invest in a water-saving kitchen faucet. There are many, many models on the market to choose from, and most of them feature a “low flow” of around 1.5 gallons per minute while retaining around 60 psi of pressure. Factor those two statistics together, and you’ve got a faucet for your green kitchen that reduces the amount of water you use by around one-third.

Food disposer

Did you ever wonder what happens to the food scraps that you toss into the trash? Bits of leftover food and unwanted food from your trash ends up in the already overburdened landfill, where it begins the decomposition process.

Food that is disposed of using a food disposer is carried instead into the wastewater treatment facility in your area, and in many areas, food waste is converted to clean energy to power homes and communities. Taking those food scraps out of the garbage and disposing of them with a disposer means that your trash can is more sanitary – and smells better!

Water filtration system

Tired of the expense of bottled water from questionable sources? Then you should know that Planet Earth is equally tired of your plastic water bottles littering its streams and rivers and stacking up in its landfills.

An easy solution for the both of you is a water filtration system. This system can be as simple as a filtration pitcher with an attached carbon filter or as complex as a whole-house system that filters water for the entire house, including the bathrooms and laundry room.

Filtered water is just as tasty as the bottled variety, and costs just pennies on the gallon. This is one green kitchen upgrade that will literally pay for itself over time when you’re no longer doling out two bucks a bottle for water.

Buy Energy Star appliances

Although it makes no sense from an environmental standpoint (since the old appliance would have to go somewhere) for you to replace your kitchen appliances merely because you want to go green, it does make sense (when you’re ready for a replacement because they are no longer usable) to replace them with Energy Star certified appliances.

The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) only awards the Energy Star to energy-efficient appliances that save energy.

These are just the top upgrades to consider for a green kitchen. From green flooring choices like bamboo, to using reclaimed countertops and natural cleaning products, there are dozens of ways to reduce your “carbon footprint” in the kitchen.

There’s nothing like a good game of pool to unwind after a hard day. Saloons and billiards halls around the world have known for decades how much fun people have playing pool. It’s a great way to socialize and have some good times. More people are taking the leap to setting up a pool room at home. These kinds of game rooms can be a great place for the whole family to spend some quality time together. If you like to entertain or have parties, a billiards room will be a hit with all your guests.

Billiards Room Size

You will want to start with the obvious when it comes to setting up a home pool room – the pool table. Pool tables take up a lot of space, and you want to ensure enough room around the perimeter of the table for people to make their shots. A regulation size pool table requires plenty of space, so be sure that you have enough room before you bring in a table. Remember that the idea for a pool room is a place to have some fun, so don’t cram too much table into too small a space. If you don’t have enough room in your basement or recreation room, you can build out, if you have the cash. Another alternative is to choose a smaller sized table. Even if it is not a regulation table, any sized pool table can be lots of fun.

Billiards Room Style

Think pool hall style when decorating your billiards room. If you already have a small wet-bar in the room that will go a long way toward creating the right atmosphere. Consider investing in some small neon signs to up the ante on pool room authenticity. You should also have a nice flat-screen television for players to watch when they are not shooting. Cool burgundy and deep green colours are the perfect colours for your home pool room décor.

If you are adding a billiards room to your house, go all out. Take the time to design and decorate the room with an authentic pub-style décor. You’ll save money by not having to go out to the clubs to play some pool. Before you know it, you may even become a pool shark that runs the table when your friends come over.

You’re all set. You’ve made your colour choices; you know what kind of carpeting you will get. To put it bluntly, you are ready to start your home redecoration project. Before you commit all the way, consider your living room furniture selections. Many people pick their living room furniture around a large couch. There are other ways to approach living room furniture that may make the room truly unique. Think outside of the proverbial box and you may just come up with some furniture picks that will really impress your family and guests.

No Couch Allowed

The thought of not having a couch in the living room causes some people to panic. We’ve all had living rooms with the couch as the focal piece of furniture for decades. It is ingrained into our subconscious. It is just the way things are supposed to be. Remember interior design is about knowing the rules so that you can successfully break them from time-to-time. So get couches out of your plans… if you dare.

Instead of a couch, this approach is going to rely on several smaller chairs and benches. It may seem like a radical change but that is OK. You will get used to the idea soon enough. You can even map this out on a piece of paper to get an idea of how it will work. Choose a style of wooden or rattan chairs that will fit in with your overall colour scheme as well as a bench that will comfortably seat two to three people. How you lay the room out is up to you. You will probably want to purchase some cushions for the chairs and bench to make them more comfortable.

This type of living room design makes it easy to change things around in a flash. The lack of a couch will take some time to get used to, but it will pay off big time when you get the bug to rearrange the furniture. With no couch in the living room there will be no tendency to fall asleep in front of the television or for the kids to slouch around in the living room being lazy.

This approach may not be for everyone, but if you like to rearrange furniture frequently, this could be the most mobile living room layout you have ever seen.

There are so many articles on home decorating that you could fill a large library. If you read enough tips about redecorating a living room, you often find that the author assumes that it is a house that is being decorated. Many people live in apartments where it is not always possible to go as all-out as you can in your own home. Decorating your living space is important no matter where you live. Many first-time apartment renters are looking for a way to spruce up their first apartment. Here are some quick tips to get some great style into your apartment or condo.

A Fresh Coat Of Paint

When you moved into your apartment, there’s a good chance that a fresh coat of white paint was on the walls. If you want some more colours on the walls, a new coat may be in order. Be sure that your landlord will allow you to do this before you splash up some new colours. You don’t want to break any rules, especially if you just moved in. If you are allowed to do this, pick a nice lively colour for your living room. White walls can get tiresome; don’t be afraid to add some colours to perk up your new living room.

Think Smaller When Buying Living Room Furniture

Many times people that live in apartments try to shove too much furniture in the living room. Your living room is probably where you will spend most of your time, so take every effort to keep the room open and comfortable. Instead of a huge sectional or large couch, choose a small love seat and a few chairs. This will keep your living room from becoming too crowded with furniture. Instead of a coffee table, try bringing two, smaller end-tables together and covering them with a nice piece of fabric. This allows you to rearrange the tables in a flash and create some extra space when you have company.

Above all, make the apartment a reflection of your personal style. Never go beyond the limitations of your lease, though. A little creativity and choosing furniture that will not overcrowd the living room will allow you greater flexibility in setting up your first apartment.

We live in a hectic, noisy, stressful world. Wouldn’t it be nice to come home in the evenings to a little peace and quiet? That may seem like a pipe-dream to you. With cell-phones, loud television shows, and a rambunctious family, you may be wondering how you could ever achieve any peace in your home. Indoor water fountains and miniature waterfalls are a great way to add a little restful tranquility to your living space. The soothing sound of water flowing and the beautiful appearance of these fountains can bring some much needed peace and restfulness to your home’s style. These fountains come in a variety of sizes and styles that can easily fit in with any room. In fact you may find that by adding one of these fountains to your busy living room, everyone may become a little more reflective and quiet. Wouldn’t that be a nice perk?

Make an Indoor Fountain the Centerpiece of A Busy Living Room

Home style is all about making your living space a reflection of your personal style. Why not change things up and instead of making a television or computer screen the focal point of a room, instead center a room’s design on a beautiful indoor fountain? In fact you can design a whole room around a flowing water theme for the ultimate relaxation. Choose one larger waterfall piece as the focal point and set up 2 or 3 smaller fountains. Add to this room some artistic prints of tranquil river or ocean views and you have a room custom-built for unwinding and relaxing.

Few things in nature are as conducive to peacefulness as water. Add a few fountains to your home design to bring some of that restfulness into your busy life. You’ll be surprised with the effect that some simple indoor fountains and waterfalls can have on the atmosphere in your home. Plus these fountains act as perfect, natural humidifiers and can make a room have a more comfortable feeling. Bring the peace of a river stream into your home to calm things down.
