Making improvements to your home can be very rewarding. The reward you receive should last you longer than the moment you complete it. There are many things that you can put into place to make sure that you have done things right so that you can continue to enjoy the efforts you have put forth.

Use the Right Materials

It can be tempting to use more economical products when undertaking a project around your home, but it may not be best for you in the long run. The saying, “you get what you pay for” is more correct than you think. If you are going to be putting in the labor in completing a project, you will want to enjoy it for years to come.
Look at what you buying and buy the products you need that will last you for as long as you need it to. For example, if you are painting a room that you know you will be painting again in the foreseeable future, there is not a need to purchase a lifetime kind of paint. On the flip side, if you are painting the exterior of your home, you probably do not want to be painting it again in a year or two, so get paint that is rated to last. Although getting quality products is a little more expensive on the front end, it will save you more than what you save in the future.

Do It Right the First Time

Cutting corners to get the job done faster is a very appealing thought when completing projects around your home. This would be a very bad choice on your part as you will most likely need to go back and fix what you didn’t do in the first place. If you do not know how to do a job, find someone who knows what they’re doing to assist you. If finding additional help is not an option for your project, do the necessary research in order to educate yourself. Check out your local home improvement stores to find out if they are doing any workshops that have to do with your current project or even for future projects. There are many people willing to provide you with the answers, all you have to do is ask.

Rebates and Returns

Often times when you are doing upgrades to your home, there are financial incentives available to you. If you are putting in new windows, there may be a rebate available from your power company. If you are upgrading to natural gas or upgrading your natural gas appliances, there may be a rebate available from the gas company. If you are replacing a toilet, there may be a rebate available from the water company. Not only that, the government occasionally offers rebates for energy efficient upgrades. In addition to rebates, you may be able to deduct these upgrades on your tax return. So, keep all of the receipts and ask your tax professional what you can write off so as to either reduce what you owe or to increase your return.
Thoroughly think through your household projects. Make sure that you are putting in the right materials and skills so that you don’t regret cutting corners in the future. Find out when the best time is to do these projects to make the best of them through rebates and returns. Reaping the rewards can be much more than enjoying the finished product.

If you’re thinking about adding a room, or changing a room to fit another purpose, you should take some time to consider what you would really like to do with another room in your house. Depending on the particulars of your house, adding a room can be quite an expensive endeavour. If you’re thinking of doing any kind of remodelling you should familiarize yourself with the local building codes and any laws that may prohibit what you are thinking of doing to your home. If you live in a neighbourhood with a Homeowner’s Association, you will have to clear any outer changes to your house, including room additions.

Unless you have an architecture or construction design background you will need to hire somebody to design your new room. There are some contractors who include architectural design in their services but using an independent architect will give you better results. Architects supply blueprints, which are a must for builders and are a great way to show government agencies exactly what your building plans look like.

Since you are thinking of going to all the trouble of building an entirely new space attached to your home, you should try to consider every possible pro and con of the design and how the space might be used. You might want to go so far as to consider what furniture you would like to fit in the room. Is it going to be a play area for the children or the formal dining room you always wanted? It’s best to fill in all the pieces before construction begins.

Another option to throw on the table when considering a new room is green building construction. If you are a homeowner, it is worth considering the benefits of green building when you start thinking about plans to improve your home. This movement has a huge (and growing) public following and a number of construction companies are certified green builders. Taking this route means you will be worry free if the demand and price for resources like power and water continue to increase. For example, over time if solar panels are located in the right areas on your house/property, you can save hundreds of dollars on your electricity bill, thanks to this renewable resource.

Needless to say, looking into how you can make the newest addition to your home as environmentally friendly as possible is beneficial for you and the environment. You will have to weigh the cost/benefit ratio for yourself, your home, and your environment before coming to a decision. Although green technology is becoming more popular, it can be an expensive venture. Keep in mind though the benefit is it lowers long-term energy costs and in the end will save you money.

There are many options to consider when doing a remodel. Whichever way you decide to build your new addition to your home, make sure it works for you!

Many homeowners wish they could just click their fingers to recreate the home of their dreams. Overall planning coupled with costs, time and energy required to add onto a home can be overwhelming. But rest assured, if you can imagine a different home, it can become a reality with the careful assistance of the right contractor and proper planning. Whatever the project, establishing good working relationships with the company that will transform your residence will make the journey worthwhile throughout the entire process. Experienced builders will be willing to listen and assist you in creating the personal home remodeling or room additions you are longing for, resulting in your ultimate satisfaction.

Remodeling

For your home remodel it is vital to contact a reputable home contractor to obtain portfolios of prior work and credible references. Your contractor can provide an estimate on the costs needed for the overall project to be completed. Make certain contracts cover all possible work to be done so there will not be any unwanted surprises. Save money by planning ahead and choosing products that will meet your requirements but not break the budget. Be aware that the longer it takes for a project to complete, the more costly it will be. Adding space and moving windows always increases the price tag. Determine if current heating and cooling systems can be accommodated in new rooms to save installing separate systems. It may also be more affordable to have work done in phases over time.

Home Design

Deciding on your home design can incorporate a number of factors according to what the budget is. Careful coordination with your contractor is essential to avoid unforeseen problems. Plans should be examined for efficiency and ability to blend with the existing structure. Choose everything from lights to fixtures prior to the onset of construction to prevent costly decisions later on. Keep a small reserve fund for unforeseen purchases. Focus on aesthetic appeal balanced with practical needs. While luxury fixtures and appliances may be desired, that money may be better spent on more basic amenities. Sometimes areas can be expanded to make them larger rather than adding extra space. Think of other ways to reduce expenses by changing parts of the interior of your home without the added cost of altering all structures, such as using paint and wallpaper, or visually creating the illusion of depth.

Bedroom Additions

Bedroom additions are one option for those looking to bring about extra room for their family needs and can also make a great idea for creating space for the future. A new bedroom will add considerable value to your home, making it a cost effective decision in the long run. Before adding an entire new room, decide if you can expand on a current space or remove walls to increase the size of an existing area to reduce costs. If the addition will be for adults, will a seating area or an adjoining bathroom be considered? For children, a window seat or play area might factor into the design process. As with any remodeling plan, be mindful of realistic choices to keep your project in line with your allotted budget.

You’re all set. You’ve made your colour choices; you know what kind of carpeting you will get. To put it bluntly, you are ready to start your home redecoration project. Before you commit all the way, consider your living room furniture selections. Many people pick their living room furniture around a large couch. There are other ways to approach living room furniture that may make the room truly unique. Think outside of the proverbial box and you may just come up with some furniture picks that will really impress your family and guests.

No Couch Allowed

The thought of not having a couch in the living room causes some people to panic. We’ve all had living rooms with the couch as the focal piece of furniture for decades. It is ingrained into our subconscious. It is just the way things are supposed to be. Remember interior design is about knowing the rules so that you can successfully break them from time-to-time. So get couches out of your plans… if you dare.

Instead of a couch, this approach is going to rely on several smaller chairs and benches. It may seem like a radical change but that is OK. You will get used to the idea soon enough. You can even map this out on a piece of paper to get an idea of how it will work. Choose a style of wooden or rattan chairs that will fit in with your overall colour scheme as well as a bench that will comfortably seat two to three people. How you lay the room out is up to you. You will probably want to purchase some cushions for the chairs and bench to make them more comfortable.

This type of living room design makes it easy to change things around in a flash. The lack of a couch will take some time to get used to, but it will pay off big time when you get the bug to rearrange the furniture. With no couch in the living room there will be no tendency to fall asleep in front of the television or for the kids to slouch around in the living room being lazy.

This approach may not be for everyone, but if you like to rearrange furniture frequently, this could be the most mobile living room layout you have ever seen.

 Tweet This Post

There are so many articles on home decorating that you could fill a large library. If you read enough tips about redecorating a living room, you often find that the author assumes that it is a house that is being decorated. Many people live in apartments where it is not always possible to go as all-out as you can in your own home. Decorating your living space is important no matter where you live. Many first-time apartment renters are looking for a way to spruce up their first apartment. Here are some quick tips to get some great style into your apartment or condo.

A Fresh Coat Of Paint

When you moved into your apartment, there’s a good chance that a fresh coat of white paint was on the walls. If you want some more colours on the walls, a new coat may be in order. Be sure that your landlord will allow you to do this before you splash up some new colours. You don’t want to break any rules, especially if you just moved in. If you are allowed to do this, pick a nice lively colour for your living room. White walls can get tiresome; don’t be afraid to add some colours to perk up your new living room.

Think Smaller When Buying Living Room Furniture

Many times people that live in apartments try to shove too much furniture in the living room. Your living room is probably where you will spend most of your time, so take every effort to keep the room open and comfortable. Instead of a huge sectional or large couch, choose a small love seat and a few chairs. This will keep your living room from becoming too crowded with furniture. Instead of a coffee table, try bringing two, smaller end-tables together and covering them with a nice piece of fabric. This allows you to rearrange the tables in a flash and create some extra space when you have company.

Above all, make the apartment a reflection of your personal style. Never go beyond the limitations of your lease, though. A little creativity and choosing furniture that will not overcrowd the living room will allow you greater flexibility in setting up your first apartment.

We live in a hectic, noisy, stressful world. Wouldn’t it be nice to come home in the evenings to a little peace and quiet? That may seem like a pipe-dream to you. With cell-phones, loud television shows, and a rambunctious family, you may be wondering how you could ever achieve any peace in your home. Indoor water fountains and miniature waterfalls are a great way to add a little restful tranquility to your living space. The soothing sound of water flowing and the beautiful appearance of these fountains can bring some much needed peace and restfulness to your home’s style. These fountains come in a variety of sizes and styles that can easily fit in with any room. In fact you may find that by adding one of these fountains to your busy living room, everyone may become a little more reflective and quiet. Wouldn’t that be a nice perk?

Make an Indoor Fountain the Centerpiece of A Busy Living Room

Home style is all about making your living space a reflection of your personal style. Why not change things up and instead of making a television or computer screen the focal point of a room, instead center a room’s design on a beautiful indoor fountain? In fact you can design a whole room around a flowing water theme for the ultimate relaxation. Choose one larger waterfall piece as the focal point and set up 2 or 3 smaller fountains. Add to this room some artistic prints of tranquil river or ocean views and you have a room custom-built for unwinding and relaxing.

Few things in nature are as conducive to peacefulness as water. Add a few fountains to your home design to bring some of that restfulness into your busy life. You’ll be surprised with the effect that some simple indoor fountains and waterfalls can have on the atmosphere in your home. Plus these fountains act as perfect, natural humidifiers and can make a room have a more comfortable feeling. Bring the peace of a river stream into your home to calm things down.

You see it in the movies all the time – the person who has been stranded in the desert and is looking for an oasis for water and refreshment. While this may not happen often, there are people walking around their houses everyday thirsting for a new style for their living room; something different and daring. Here are a couple of quick tips to give your living room a hot desert theme that will impress your guests.

Desert Colours

For the walls you want to get a sandy, tan tone. Look at some desert pictures and remember to take some with you to the store in order to pick out the right colour. Put up a base coat on the walls and use a dry sponge as the coat begins to dry. The sponge will add some texture to the walls to make them pop a little bit. You can go dark or light with the tan colour, just make sure that it puts you in a desert state of mind.

Rattan or Bamboo Furniture

For a real desert feel choose rattan or bamboo furniture. There are some very stylish designs in these materials and they will be the perfect addition to your desert themed room. A nice touch on the chairs is to get some deep, rusty coloured cushions for comfort and to add some deeper, richer tones to the room.

Top It Off With Some Authentic Desert Life

When you think of the desert, you probably think of cacti. These plants are easy to take care of and will really put your living room over the top. You can get them in many varieties and sizes. Consider safety when you get these plants. If you have little ones running around, you may want to choose some non-sticking varieties that won’t hurt anyone.

Put your own spin on the finishing touches to your desert room. Buy some art work that fits in with the theme as well as your own personal style. One fun thing to do is to buy some clear glass vases and fill them with sand, then place them on tables and shelves to finish of your desert themed room. You’ll have your own personal desert paradise without having to worry about filling up a canteen to stay hydrated.

Choosing the right living room furniture is a simple way to make your guests feel comfortable and welcome in your home. Choosing the right living room furniture is not as difficult as you may think. However, choosing the right living room furniture is the key point in making the room timeless.

It’s hard not to think of the living room first when you are planning a design makeover. The living room seems in so many ways to be the center of activity. Few rooms have as much furniture as the living room or as much to think about in terms of design. If you are having company over, you know how important it is to have a good looking room for everyone to relax in. More than anything, though, you want your living room to be an extension of your personal style. It should reflect the kind of atmosphere that you want to be dominant in all of your rooms.

Take Time to Plan

The biggest cause of failures in nearly all pursuits is the lack of planning. Before you go out and decide on furniture and paint, take some time to reflect on what you want your living room design to communicate to guests. Are you looking for a livelier room that is more high-tech and cutting edge? Or would you rather opt for country simplicity that is more relaxing?

Assess the Room As It Is

Before you do a complete overhaul, take a look at the room as it is right now. Do you need to change everything or will a simple coat of paint take care of your design needs? Maybe a new couch would be a good place to start. Pick one aspect and attack from that angle. Don’t get yourself too deeply entrenched in a huge project. You never know, a few simple things might bring out the design that you are looking for better than a total reconstruction.

The bottom line with home decorating should never be about immersing yourself in huge projects. Take things one step at a time. You may decide on new flooring that is enough to give the room the look that you are after. Your living room redesign can be a work in progress. By not getting too deep in at the beginning you allow yourself to try some smaller things, get the opinion of guests and then go further if you think you need to. Remember the most important person to please is yourself when it comes to home design. So pass on the stressful renovations and focus on taking it one step at a time.

Is your living room stuck in the past? Are you looking for a way to blast your living room design into the 21st Century? Getting modern with your living room means taking a turn toward minimalism in design. Of course even the most minimally designed rooms still need the right furniture. You just can’t have a living room without a couch. Streamlined and sparse are the goals when going modern or post-modern in your design plans. Here are some tips to get you moving in the right direction.

Staying Comfortable

One of the big design mistakes that people make when going for a more modern approach is to sacrifice comfort for style. There is no need to get this drastic. Keep comfort as a main priority. Think about how much time you spend on your couch before you jump into any purchase. Think soft, clean, and comfortable. The sofa is one piece of furniture that you don’t want to skimp on. For smaller, more cramped living rooms, a two-seat couch or love-seat may be the right way to go. No matter if you go for a sectional or a love-seat, buy for comfort and looks.

Modern Designs

Keeping comfort squarely in mind, consider style. Modern designs should feature cool, attractive patterns and clean, pleasing lines. Stay with a neutral colour. Many people gravitate toward floral designs or pastel colours for couch choices. You are trying to develop a look that screams functionality and comfort.

Think Leather

Leather furniture is the one holdover from classic designs that still works well in modern designs. Leather is a classic for sofas; easy to clean, comfortable and tame colours make leather a good choice nearly every time. It is more expensive, but since your sofa is the focal point of your living room, spend the extra money to make it great.

A deep, dark leather couch is the perfect start to a modern living room design. You don’t have to go with leather for every piece of furniture, just work from the sofa colour and develop a pleasing, somewhat neutral colour scheme. Dark colours are especially attractive and tend to make people feel more relaxed and at home. Comfort and clean lines along with functionality makes a leather couch the perfect start for your modern living room redesign.

The living room is usually the crowning jewel for home design. When you have guests over or want to unwind and watch a movie, the living room is usually the central location. Nothing can change the way you feel about the inside of your house faster than a quick living room makeover. Here are a few steps to make a living room redesign much easier.

Take time to think about what you really want. Don’t rush into your redesign. A good suggestion is to walk out of your house, clear your mind, and then walk into the living room. Think about how you feel and write it down. Now think about how you want the room to make you feel and write that down.

Compare your two lists. Find the things on your list that bother you the most. For instance, if you think the room makes you feel dreary and dull, and on your other list you find that you want the room to make you feel lively and energized, you have a good starting point.

Move things around. A quick furniture shuffle can do wonders to put you into a more creative mindset. Start with a few smaller items, and build your way up to moving everything else. You can get some great ideas for things you need to get, or get rid of, by simply moving some things around.

Get some new cushions and throws for your couch and chairs. You can add a quick splash of colour and style by throwing some colourful new pillows and throws on your furniture. You may not even want to get new furniture if you see how these things can liven up what you already have.

Make your living room redesign a work in progress. Living rooms are typically one of the largest rooms in the house. Don’t feel overwhelmed by how much there is to do. Choose one thing to work on from the list you made and zero in on that for the next few months. You may find that by the time you finish just one thing off your list, you have a whole new feel to your living room.

Take time to think about how you feel about the design of your living room as you go through this process. You may take a wrong turn that makes you like the room less than when you started; that’s OK. The beauty of breaking up your designing efforts like this is that you can always change courses and bring new ideas into the mix. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll accomplish and how you’ll feel about the room in just a few weeks.
