1. Ride Carefully

Always be careful when operating a water vessel. This means you should travel at the suggested speed limit and respect the navigational aids that have been provided for you. Give others the right of way and never behave recklessly while operating a boat, nor operate the vessel while tipsy or drunk.

2. Chart out Your Plan of Passage

Inform others traveling with you of your passage plan. You might even register your course with the coast guard or local marina workers. The route you will be taking will be of interest to anyone else who is at sea. A passage plan includes contact information, your type of boat, the itinerary, the safety equipment you carry on board, all communication devices, and signal equipment.

3. Learn How to Swim

This is unavoidable. As great a captain as you are, you must learn how to swim in the event of an emergency. You must be humble enough to admit that things can go wrong at any moment. Besides, if you know how to swim you might be able to save another boater’s life one day. Carry life jackets with you (one for each passenger) at all times.

4. Pay Attention to the Weather.

Check the local weather forecast before you depart. You should also take along a radio and radar with you if at all possible. Even if you heard no news, be mindful of rough winds, darkening clouds, or a drop in temperature. Don’t take chances with inclement weather!

Have a good time out on the water but play it safe.
