What’s old is new again–as long as the styles of old are true classics worthy of reconsideration. Styles in menswear evolve with a stately slowness, which is good news for men. A well-tailored suit is not, after all, an inexpensive item, which is why the enduring quality of many menswear styles is good news all around.

We’ve seen some trends come and go in menswear, but the great news is that the truly classic styles, like suits and jackets made in tweed, are back–and with good reason. Finely constructed wool jackets and suits are menswear that just doesn’t go out of style. Let’s talk about a few of the ways we’re seeing these classic looks being worn today.

The Tweed Hunting Jacket

Tweed suits, which can be worn at the office or for casually dressy social events, are an always-great choice for a man. A tweed-hunting jacket is also a great style for a man, and this type of jacket works well for a variety of occasions. Broad shoulders and a long refined line are the hallmarks of these jackets, which have an ease of movement and an easy masculine feel that works well out on the hunt, or worn casually during a dinner with friends. These jackets are reliably elegant, in a wonderfully sporty way.

The Oxford Shirt

A great suit quite naturally calls for a great shirt, and frankly, it just doesn’t get much better than a classically designed Oxford shirt. With its clean, crisp lines, classic collar and cuffs, these shirts are menswear at their best. Dress this shirt up with a silk tie and cuff links, or go unadorned and match it with a cashmere v-neck sweater for a look that combines elegance with an utterly attractive masculinity. Finish off the look by putting on a tweed coat, and get ready to face the world with winning style.

Oxford Shoes

The well-dressed foot is a critical part of a man’s overall presentation. Good quality shoes make a man feel great, giving him the lift and confidence needed to present himself at the top of his game. Oxford shoes are a true classic that can be worn with suits or even a casual ensemble of khaki pants and a v-neck sweater. Well-constructed oxfords in smooth leather are an always-right choice for a man who wants to look and feel great.

As a trend that’s inspired the Hipster revolution and received attention from celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, it’s clear that Comic-Con is no longer the only place to showcase the inner-nerd.

Mastering the geek look can be tricky. Overstating is a major faux paux, while understating won’t get the point across. Bold-print shirts, anything tweed and acrylic knitted jumpers are safe places to start; But if you’re looking to further your education in geek-chic, follow our basic do’s and don’ts to get your look street-ready.

Hot: Mohawks

Bobak “Mohawk Guy” Ferdowsi is a flight director for NASA’s Mars rover, Curiosity, and has helped bring this trendy look into the geekdom. Gaining Internet fame via Twitter and Google+, Ferdowsi balances his nerd with this hard-edged look making it likable enough to go mainstream. When attempting a ‘hawk, remember that great style is all about balance. Do not match this hairdo with crazy hair-dyes and facial piercings. Do it like Ferdowsi, subtle enough to be taken seriously yet loud enough to be noticed.

Not: Bowl-Cuts and Side-Parts

Nothing makes a date prospect run faster than a Trump-inspired side sway or a ’90s bowl cut. With fall fashion being all about edge, use hair as a safe place to bring out your inner bad boy. Look to the pompadours and sideburns of rock legends, such as Elvis or Johnny Cash, to balance geek garments.

Hot: Inspiration from Science

As is true with all forms of art, a cutting-edge awakening can blossom from even the simplest of sources. This fall, retired microbiologist turned fashion designer Camilla Olson is changing the fashion landscape. Earning a Masters from fashion designer school before trading in her lab coat and goggles for textile samples and sewing machines, Olson’s inspiration stems from art, science and technology. When attempting to integrate this look into personal style, think simple lines, colors and organic textures that mirror the elements.

Not: Inspiration from Actual Science Nerds

Geek chic is about being influenced by the lifestyles and stereotypes of nerd culture, not actually becoming one. Steer clear of pocket protectors, taped-framed glasses and suspenders.

Hot: Channeling Your Inner Superhero

Nothing screams geek more than an infatuation with the heroic characters of classic comics. Although a hobby of comic book collecting is not required to get this look, superhero vintage tees are a great starting place. Wearing them under a blazer or alone with jeans is a simple way to add geek flare to a normal outfit.

Not: Taking it too Far

It’s OK to wave the freak flag high, but not too high. Unless you’re attending Comic-Con, keep the superhero influences to a bare minimum. Glasses, plaid shorts and T-shirts are about as far as the look should go when mirroring the heroes and their alter-egos. Unless you’ve got abs of steel like a superhero, keep the spandex at home.

Hot: Accessorizing Like a Boss

The right accessories can really define a look and polish-off a particular style. For the nerd look, the subtleties to your normal every-day look is what’s going to make a look chic, rather than overstated. Thick-rimmed glasses, vintage watches, bright bow-ties and eccentric ties are easy and affordable geeky accents. Novelty cuff-links are a great way to step up creativity in achieving the geek look.

Not: Accessorizing Like a Tool

Nothing is more unattractive than trying too hard. Cheesy chains and overly embellished accessories make a potentially chic outfit turn into something trashy quickly. When in doubt, remember less is more.

It’s the rare man that wants to spend hours getting ready for a day at work or a night out on the town. This summer’s fun fashion trends make dressing easy and quick. Look for great colours, comfortable fabrics and great accessories to kick off your summer in style. Here are fun fashion trends for this season, guaranteed to make you look fashionable with barely an effort:

Sportswear

This season, men’s fashion is all about sportswear. And no, we don’t mean throwing on your worn out sweats and ratty tennis shoes. Fashion this season has taken inspiration from all facets of the sports world: from shirts reminiscent of the polo field to jackets taken right off the college campus, these trends are hot, hot, hot! Look for hoodies without zippers, short-sleeved raglan tees and Bermuda shorts that hit mid-knee. You’ll look trendy and effortless!

Custom T’s

This season is all about individuality! Take on your creative side and hit the internet to create your own fashion. Many online clothing companies are giving you the chance to customize just about anything, so take the initiative and run with it! For starters check out spreadshirt.com, they are super user friendly and you can get your fashionable creation within a couple of days!

Bags

If you didn’t buy into the man-bag trend of summer’s gone by, good for you! The murse is now obsolete, considered to be a bridge to the now popular backpack. When choosing a great backpack, look for durable canvas and leather bags that have an air of masculinity. Leave the Jansport bags on the shelf! A sturdy backpack can take you from work to the beach, giving you a hip, trendy look that others will admire.

Accessories

Accessories are becoming more popular for men; when worn correctly. Don’t load yourself down with a hat, tie, watch, scarf and sunglasses. Choose one or two accessories and wear them well. If you want to wear a burst of colour in your blazer’s breast pocket, skip the tie. If you want to wear a watch, skip the pinky ring. A great hat can take the place of sunglasses but doesn’t need to be worn in conjunction with them. It’s all about the understated, trendy look with accessories. Choose wisely!

Natural Fabrics

Designers are jumping on the green bandwagon and offering more options in the way of natural fabrics. Look for clothing and accessories made with organic cotton or natural fabrics like hemp and bamboo. These fabrics are kinder to the environment, nicer to your skin and give you a stylish look without making it appear as though you spend hours getting dressed. If you want to take it a step further, visit a great site like MooShoes and look for environmentally-friendly kicks.
With a closet full of the latest gear, you can easily wake-up, get dressed and walk out of the house looking trendy in 15 minutes or less. This summer’s men’s fashion will give you a sporty, casual appearance that you’ll love. Just be prepared for all that attention you get from the ladies!

Taking the best of men’s fashions off the runways and red carpets and incorporating them into casual and dressed-up outfits that are fashionable and trendy, without seeming overly self-conscious is a delicate art. You never want to look like you just stepped out of the pages of a men’s fashion magazine, but you do want that cool, of-the-moment vibe that comes from appropriating just the right fashion trends into your look. Luckily for you, blogs like The Urban Agent and magazines like Esquire and Details can help you translate designer looks and celebrity ensembles into fully wearable outfits.

1. The Denim Shirt. The faded, casual denim shirt has ridden to sudden prominence as the number one thing for a guy to wear this summer. Urban Agent recommends a chambray shirt with a tailored fit to wear with a blazer and nice jeans and another looser denim shirt to pair with khakis for the weekend. Esquire suggests that you keep the look less cowboy and more “off duty rock star” with a casual, classic denim shirt from Levi’s.

2. Boat Shoes. If you want to pull off the huge summer trend of going sockless with dress shoes (and Urban Agent and GQ suggest that you do) you will need a pair of classic all-American boat shoes to carry out the look. You don’t need to go all Ivy League about it—no popped colors, no salmon coloured pants—just a pair of classy boat shoes, some light pants, and a killer preppy attitude.

3. The Canvas Backpack. When you are juggling a cell phone, camera, iPad, and maybe an energy bar or a spare deodorant, it can be tempting to just throw everything into a reusable shopping bag or a “murse” and call it a day. But fashionable men are reclaiming the backpack from the kids department and transforming it into the ultimate practical accessory. Urban Agent suggests a classic or vintage rucksack-style backpack for all your essentials, while Details touts canvas as the perfect summer alternative to classic and boring leather. A cream-colored canvas backpack with rich leather accents is the perfect carry-all that is both manly and practical.

4. The Leather Jacket. No, this one isn’t new, and chances are you already know that the leather jacket is the ideal fall and spring transitional piece. But you can also wear a leather jacket in the summer, provided you keep it cool and casual with a v-neck tee, some man jewelry, and a perfect pair of shades. Esquire even suggests that you abandon the classic black and simple brown jackets and dare to wear the coloured leather jacket—camel, navy, and even Michael Jackson red are all big trends for 2011.

5. The Espadrille Sneaker. Popularized by the charitable organization and shoe designer that is Toms, these casual canvas shoes have become the go-to shoe for any fashionable guy. Lighter than traditional sneakers, more mature than Converse All-Stars, and more respectable than sandals, espadrille sneakers are easy to wear with everything—even shorts.

6. The Summer Sweater. There are plenty of occasions that call for something more than a t-shirt, but you really don’t want to wear a full suit. Those are perfect times to wear the ever-popular summer-weight sweater, which can actually be more comfortable than a dress shirt if you choose a light fabric and weave. Esquire suggests the nautical look of the classic navy and white striped sweater or the crisp preppiness of a trimmed tennis sweater like the classic Lacoste ribbed v-neck.

7. Diamond Jewelry. Most men do not buy diamonds for themselves, and probably never expected to wear diamond jewelry in their lifetimes. But subtle, masculine diamond jewelry is gaining popularity, and not just rappers’ earrings. Diamond rings can be used for everything from wedding bands to signet rings to a powerful fashion statement, and a dog tag necklace with a diamond chip has just the right combination of edginess and classic appeal.

8. The Light Suit. If you are going to any weddings or formal occasions this season, it’s time to retire your classic black suit in favour of something much more summery. There is the cool-guy approach to the warm-weather suit of an all-white ensemble of white tee, jacket, and skinny jeans. Or you can opt for something more classic and refined with a linen suit in stone, beige, or light gray, finishing the outfit with a dress shirt in a tropical-inspired color like a not-too-bright but strong blue. GQ recommends that you wear a linen suit with confidence—the wrinkles are part of the look. Don’t forget to finish off your look with brown shoes and vintage shades.

9. Huarache Loafers. If you are going to wear sandals, which were seen all over the runways this year despite being a somewhat controversial footwear choice, Urban Agent recommends that you choose the Brazilian sandals known as Huaraches. Woven leather sandals that expose only a bit of skin while still keeping you cool and comfortable, huaraches are a far more classy and manly choice than flip flops, Adidas shower shoes, or the strappy men’s sandals recently marching down the designer runway.

10. Short Hair. Long, floppy locks may look good on celebrities who probably spend more time and money on their hair than your girlfriend and all her friends put together, but short-cropped hair can be just as sexy and puts you at much less risk of looking ridiculous. If you are going to an important event like a wedding, get your hair cut one week before so it will have time to grow out just enough to look natural.

The debate has now been going on for sometime, the big question being which fabric is better for men’s shirts, cotton shirt fabrics or blended shirt fabrics?

Actually there are pros and cons for both sides. Cotton has a very attractive appearance and is an excellent conductor of heat which makes it ideal for hot weather or places where the humidity is high. Cotton is also very natural and very comfortable to wear at all times. It is also recognized as the standard by which all other shirt fabrics are judged.

The problem with cotton for men’s shirts is that it wrinkles at the least excuse and also easily gets bleach damage. This is why most men have a well-loved cotton shirt in their wardrobe that suffered some kind of damage and yet they cannot bring themselves to throw it out yet.

In sharp contrast the big advantage with blended shirt fabrics is that they are often resistant to wrinkles. They also have a very nice appearance and yet are cheaper than cotton shirts.

The down side of blended shirts is that they are more vulnerable to heat damage from an iron with all the man-made fiber in them. On a hot day they also tend to be extremely uncomfortable. It is not the kind of shirt you would comfortably perspire in.

In the final analysis cotton shirts and blended shirts both have their good points and negative ones as well. So, it is probably a better idea to have both in your wardrobe and to use them alternately considering their different strengths and weaknesses.

Is your favourite pair of underwear disintegrating as we speak? Are your favourite over-washed comfy tees now sporting some not so cool holes? Yes, we men sometimes do have a hard time letting go of lived-in favourites. Who says we aren’t sentimental?

However, if your current look is more hobo than hot, maybe it is time to suck it up and actually go shopping. Before you go out and buy parachute pants and trucker hats, it might be a good idea to read about the latest fashion trends in men’s clothing.

Let’s start with an essential for men: a great pair of jeans. The trend of jeans practically hanging to the floor is not a good look on you or anyone else in reality. Think about it: do you like seeing some other dude’s boxer shorts and unsightly crack every day? Luckily, this trend is on its way out. The current look in jeans is dark wash, and relaxed fit. Brands like Hugo Boss, Seven, Diesel, and Lucky Brand are the current top sellers. If you can’t afford the bigger brands, Gap also makes quality stylish jeans. Just remember to get something that fits!

Other stores to check out for a good idea of what is current in men’s clothing are H&M, Uniqlo and J. Crew. Even eBay and thrift stores can help you locate some righteous finds like leather boots, warm flannels and collared dress shirts. A pair of good tennis shoes and a quality pair of dress shoes are essentials, as every woman loves a man with nice shoes. Retro cotton suits are also a great look that is very “in” this summer. Don’t be a carbon copy of others, buy what you like and find your own style. Just remember mustard stained t-shirts and moth eaten pants aren’t a hot look on anyone.
