There is no reason why larger men cannot look as good as anybody else in plus size clothing. It really doesn’t matter whether a person prefers casual wear or suits. As long as you observe a few important tips and take the time to discover what colours, designs and shapes you look your best in, you will be amazed at the results.

A plus sized man must avoid at all costs tightly fitting clothes or clothes that reveal and even enhance parts of their bodies where they are bulging. This usually has the effect of making a person look even bigger than they really are which is the very opposite of what successful plus sized dressing is all about. Always seek clothes that fit well and are in fact a little larger because this will give the illusion of you being much smaller than you really are.

For this reason off the rack clothes may not always work out too well for larger sized men and will often need adjustments. The best route would be to go for custom-made clothes, especially for attire like suits.

When purchasing shirts, never forget to pay attention to the shirt sleeves and how well they fit.

A common mistake most plus sized men make is to choose sweaters and shirts that are way too large even for them. On other occasions the designs do not suit larger people. The result is that despite the fact that the plus sized clothes fit well, they still end up being unattractive and emphasizing the huge size of the wearer.

Plus sized men must be careful to take more time and pay more attention to their clothing. The advantage is that these days we have plenty of designers who specifically specialize on designing clothing for plus sized men.

Here are a few basic rules that, if observed, will help any plus sized man look much better dressed.

Always go for vertical stripes rather than horizontal stripes. Vertical stripes have the effect of drawing the eyes downwards which makes you look much taller and thinner than you really are. This is why pinstripe suits are perfect for plus sized men. Horizontal stripes have the effect of drawing the eyes to the middle and therefore emphasizing the bulge in a most grotesque way. Rather than have horizontal stripes it is better for a plus sized man to completely avoid stripes altogether.

Talking of suits, larger men should always make the effort to insist on single breasted jackets rather than anything that is double-breasted. And remember that your jacket must always cover your bottom as this will make a huge difference in how you look.

Smaller sized men can easily get away with a size that is too large or a tight fit and still look fairly good. However, plus sized men do not enjoy any such luxury. They have no option but to make sure they always get the size right. For them clothes must fit with precision. If they are too tight they will look bigger and if they are a size too big it will also emphasize their size. The ideal fit should be a perfect fit that is slightly larger.

The problem with plus sized men sometimes is that they are always wishing that they were a size smaller and therefore subconsciously choose clothes that are smaller and therefore tight fitting.

You might be surprised at the type of guys that women find attractive. No, Family Guy’s Peter Griffin is not our idea of a plus size beauty. However, it’s hard to deny that overweight actors like John Goodman, Jack Black and Kevin Smith still have their adoring female fan base. Even Elvis Presley and Marlon Brando remained sex symbols until their dying day. Being plus-size doesn’t mean that you should give up all hope and start wearing a moo-moo. Follow these basic fashion tips for plus-size men.

1. Avoid oversized clothing like baggy or even pleated pants. This makes a large person look “larger than life.”

2. Wear undershirts, as this can smooth out your figure and hide unsightly bulges.

3. Whenever possible, (and without making a spectacle) wear suits. Suits are always slimming as are sports coats. Ties also have a slimming effect.

4. Avoid short-sleeve shirts.

5. Keep your pants legs un-cuffed and avoid jeans with long legs.

6. Try to wear v-neck t-shirts for a slimming effect.

7. Stick to darker colours, remember black is always slimming.

8. Avoid tight-fitting clothes. Wear your shirt un-tucked, but be sure to iron it first. Wrinkles can accentuate the extra weight.

9. Wear single-breasted suits that can be buttoned up, the higher the buttons, the more distraction it provides.

10. Wear pinstriped-clothing if possible, as this has a thinning effect. On the other hand, avoid anything plaid, horizontal striped or any similar patterns, as this widens your figure out.

Last but not least, wear your clothes with confidence! If you make an effort to look good and project a successful and happy image, you will look good regardless of size. Look clean and put some effort into dressing up. If you avoid the stereotypical image of a fat slob then most people won’t even notice you’re a few pounds overweight.
