If you’ve been injured on the job and are unable to work, you and your family may be feeling the financial pinch at home. Bills piling up, gas for the car and groceries can all loom over your head when dealing with less income due to a workplace injury. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to help keep your head above water.

Workman’s Compensation

There are a number of types of accidents that can occur at work that will change the scope of your family and life. Forklifts, scaffolds, cranes and dangerous faulty machinery can be the cause of an accident. Laws state that all equipment should be maintained and inspected before employees begin to use at work. However, inattentiveness and rushed workers can lead to a major fail in this mandatory inspection.

Even after following your workplace guidelines and attending safety seminars, you may still find yourself the victim of an injury at your place of employment. For instance, if your duties at work include driving a forklift which was not properly maintained, it could result in an accident. If you happen to be a victim of such a situation, you will need to contact a forklift injury lawyer who can help you protect your rights and guide you through the worker’s compensation claim procedures.

Being out of work for any amount of time can cripple a family’s budget and make it difficult for them to dig their way out of debt. The workman’s compensation system is in place to protect injured individuals. The laws on this can vary from state to state, but if you’re on the job and have an accident, you need to file a claim immediately. You will also need to see a physician and receive treatment based on the extent of your injury. If you’re unable to go back to work, you’re going to have to implement a budget until your settlement comes in. This could take some time, so you need to practice frugality until it does.

Your Family Budget

If you’re unable to work and collect a paycheck after an injury, things may be tight for you financially at home. You may find that you are facing a mountain of hospital, medical and physician bills in addition to your regular monthly household expenses such as food and utilities. Now is the time to take a look at your outgoing bills and see if there are any areas that you can tweak until your workman’s compensation settlement is resolved or you’re able to go back to work. Here are some tips:

Unnecessary items, such as cable and luxury purchases, will have to be placed on the back burner

When grocery shopping, try to bring a calculator to help you keep track of costs

Plan your driving for errands wisely so you aren’t wasting gas by ‘double tripping’

For clothing, many areas have ‘swap parties’ where you can swap out gently used clothing at little or no cost

Planning for the Future

Once a settlement has been reached in your injury claim, you may receive compensation for any discomfort and pain you may have suffered. Before you spend any of that money, you need to assess your financial situation. This means going over all of your expenses and bills that you have incurred while you have been out of work, and taking into account if you’re going to be able to return to work. If you’re unable to work, your settlement needs to last into the future.

A personal injury attorney and financial planner can help you with your claim and guide you on planning for the future. They will start by taking care of all of your bills that may have piled up during your injury first. You will then need to go over and plan for the remainder of the money. If you have been permanently disabled, a financial planner can help you live within your means for the duration of your life. Depending on the amount of money that you were awarded in your claim, the money may be placed in a trust where it can acquire interest.

Getting injured on the job can be physically, mentally and financially draining. It can sometimes be a long road back to recovery and life on the norm. However, receiving a settlement check will bring you significant relief, especially when you plan for your future and spend your money wisely.

At the Perecman Firm, P.L.L.C., they offer a free consultation with a forklift injury lawyer to discuss your recovery and fair compensation.

It’s no secret in the world of business that often times it’s the biggest jerks who get ahead. Think about your own company, you probably see quite a few guys that aren’t really qualified to lead anything become big bosses or important players. You may have even used some jerk tactics in the past to get yourself noticed on a project. We’re all less than perfect on a regular basis, but no one wants to be remembered around the office as the company jerk. There are some ways to get ahead that work like a charm without requiring you to be a bully in the process.

Keep Your Eyes Open

One of the biggest factors in being successful at work is having a keen eye to see what is around the corner. If you can perceive change on the horizon, even if you don’t like the change, get involved and help to facilitate it. If the big dogs at your company are moving in a particular direction, you can either hesitate and complain about it once it starts, or see it coming and involve yourself to make things run smoothly. Change is going to happen. If you can be the kind of employee who sees what’s coming down the pike and get yourself and your team prepared, you will be more appreciated.

Stop Complaining

One of the worst kinds of guys you can be at the office is the complainer. You know the guy that has something negative to say about everything that happens? Don’t be that guy. Sure, none of our jobs are perfect, but you can’t voice a negative opinion about everything. You don’t have to be smiles and sunshine all the time, but avoid outright complaints. They lower morale and word will get back to your boss that you are complaining nonstop. You don’t want that reputation.

So get involved in changes that are happening at your office and avoid complaining all the time. If you can incorporate these two habits, you will be a more valued asset and have an easier time taking off a personal day when you want to go out and golf instead of sit through another sales meeting.

In today’s tough economy, many employers have the mindset that workers should be grateful to even have a job. This has allowed them to feel impunity as they deal with their workers and contractors. “Respect me,” bellow bosses, “or hit the road!” Given the work you’ve put into getting your current job, when is it prudent to work to stay at a company and continue to try to work your way up, and when is it better to move on to something else?

Keep On To Move Up

As your work situation becomes challenging, you need to look realistically at your prospects with the company. What is the true potential for advancement, or is your boss just dangling a carrot in front of your face? You should trust your gut feelings, as well as the hard facts about the number of recent promotions from your department. If there will be a position opening up in the next three to six months at the level where you are looking to move, it may be worth it to ride it out.

Move On To Different Pastures

On the other hand, if you find yourself dreading the workday and enduring hot and cold tirades from your manager, it may be time to move on. Even in a tough economy like this, you do have options. They may not always be greener pastures initially, but sometimes cutting your losses on a ride going nowhere can be the best career decision you’ll ever make.

The important thing to remember in both situations is to avoid being rash or impulsive. You’ve worked hard to build up work relationships, and throwing them away over a perceived, slight impression of attitude may not be worth the potential financial hardship. Run your numbers, consider your options, and make a choice grounded in logic in order to make a decision that is both smart and emotionally healthy for you in the long term.

Men earn their boyish spending sprees by giving 260 days (or more) of hard work. What about those guys who are lazy, chronically late and generally hate their jobs? Simple: they don’t love what they do. When you love what you do, you are motivated and hard work to you is like a jolt of adrenaline rush. Let’s discuss four dream careers for the average man.

1. Fitness Trainer

Imagine combining exercise endorphins with the high adrenaline of a workday. If that sounds fun to you, then maybe you should look into a fitness trainer career. Aerobics instructors and fitness trainers may work one on one with trainees or with a class of students. Since a majority of the population is overweight and do sit on their butts all day, this is a market that will never shrink.

2. Veterinary Technicians

People love their pets more than they do themselves nowadays. While we would all like to think that we have healthy self-esteem, the fact of the matter is that we spend more on vet bills than we do on doctor’s visits. Join in on this lucrative market by becoming a veterinary technician. Days pass quickly due to the fast paced environment and you get to work with animals 40 hours a week!

3. Video Game Designer

If you’re from Generation X then you would probably shove your own kid out of the way to play the newest Xbox 360 release. Why abandon your video game addiction just because you grow up? Why not become a video game designer? Breaking into video game design does require some specialized training in computer programming, but if you can create your own “death moves” and get paid for it, then it’s well worth the effort.

4. Brewmaster

There’s only one thing that could possibly compete with video games and sex. That’s beer! If you love the subtleties of beer then consider becoming a professional brewmaster. You can create your own recipes and market your own creations to restaurants and suppliers. (If you’re a finicky type of man, then don’t worry—you can create your own winery!) Once you tell people you make beer for a living you will never be dateless or friendless again!
