Spring is just around the corner which means it’s time to start thinking about your allergies. By stocking your kitchen the right way, you can help reduce the symptoms of your allergies.

There are five key ingredients, found in foods naturally, that can help you fight your allergies this season. Luckily, these vitamins and chemicals can be found in a variety of foods, ensuring that you can eat healthily without having to restrict yourself.

To fight allergies this season, be sure your foods contain:

1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is nature’s super vitamin. It helps your body fight off infections, disease and viruses, ensuring that you are able to fight off allergies with the best of them. While you can find vitamin C enriched foods, you can find the vitamin, naturally, in the following:

- Kiwi
- Potato skin
- Papaya
- Tomatoes
- Strawberries
- Broccoli
- Brussels sprouts
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
- Cauliflower
- Bell peppers
- Kale
- Spinach

To get a full serving of vitamin C, combine these foods into a healthy lunch! A spinach salad containing cauliflower, bell peppers, broccoli and tomatoes, followed by a dessert of mixed fruits, contained on the list, will ensure that you receive an adequate amount of vitamin C.

2. Probiotics

Probiotics are good bacteria found in food. They can replenish your digestive tract and help fight infection caused by bad bacteria. By paying attention to the amount of probiotics in your diet, it will help you to improve your immune system, thus fighting off the symptoms of allergies. Foods that contain probiotics are:

- Sauerkraut
- Yogurt with active cultures
- Buttermilk
- Fortified foods and beverages

If you are lactose intolerant, the thought of dairy products to help ease your allergy symptoms may be frightening. What you should know is that the probiotics in these foods can actually help lessen the symptoms for those who are lactose intolerant!

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s are fats that your body needs but can’t make on its own. Omega-3s can help reduce the inflammation associated with allergies and can help improve the overall function of your immune system. The best sources of omega-3 include: salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines and flounder. If you don’t enjoy seafood, you can also get omega-3 fatty acids by adding flaxseed or walnut oils to your diet.

4. Protein

Many people don’t think of protein as related to allergies. Protein, though, can help your body repair itself when it is attacked by allergens. Great sources of protein include: lean meats, skinless chicken and turkey, tofu, fish, legumes and egg whites. Tofu is perhaps one of the most versatile foods, easily added to scrambled eggs, rice and even smoothies.

5. Flavonoids

Flavonoids are the pigments that are responsible for giving color to flowers, fruits and vegetables. Quercetin, a natural flavonoid, is a natural antihistamine; perfect for allergy sufferers. Look for citrus fruits, garlic, apples, tomatoes, broccoli, legumes and berries to find beneficial flavonoids.

If you suffer from allergies, eating foods that contain these five super ingredients can help lessen and alleviate your symptoms. From immune building to anti-inflammatory properties, these foods are perfect for everyone, not just allergy sufferers.

If you look carefully, many foods contain more than one of these fabulous ingredients. Get creative with your cooking and try to add at least one food to every meal; your allergies will be less severe and you’ll make it through to summer with fewer symptoms.

The price difference is unfortunate as many of us would choose to buy organic if it was more budget-friendly. Here’s how you can buy organic without going broke:

1. Utilize Rewards

Most grocery stores are jumping on the loyalty card bandwagon. Sign up for a rewards card with your local grocery store, if you don’t have one already, and start taking advantage of the savings. Scan your local flyer when it comes in the mail and construct your shopping list. Often times, you can save money on organic produce by using these handy little cards.

2. Farmer’s Market

Do a bit of online research and see if you have any local farmers’ markets. Not only do these stores stock organic fruits and vegetables for better prices, but they also support the local economy. Farmer’s markets can sell produce more cheaply because they buy from local farmers, eliminating the middle-man. For even better deals, ask the manager about any seconds, or misshapen foods, or about buying in bulk.

3. Pick Your Own

Many cities have orchards and farms where guests can pick their own produce. Check to be sure that these orchards utilize organic farming methods and then head out! Take the kids along and spend a day in the fresh air, picking your own produce. You may be required to pick several bushels but take heart: you can freeze what you won’t use or try your hand at canning.

4. Join a Co-op

A co-op is a business owned by its members that provides organic produce at a discount price. You may net better discounts if you volunteer to work on the farm or in the orchard a day or two a month. You may need to pay dues but the savings you receive will far outweigh any monies you put in. For a list of co-ops near you, check out sites like Local Harvest and Cooperative Grocer. If there are none nearby, start your own!

5. Buy in Bulk

Like with every other product, buying organic groceries in bulk can save you big money. Instead of buying organic beans and grains by the box, buy them by the pound. The larger containers of these items are a far better deal. Do, however, be sure to add up the cost. Compare what you will be spending on the bulk container to an equal amount of smaller packages.

6. Buy In-Season

Each bit of produce has its own season. When you buy in-season, you will save substantially. If you can, buy large amounts of in-season fruits and vegetables and freeze what you won’t eat immediately. Foods like corn, green beans and even strawberries last wonderfully for months in the freezer. And what better way to have a taste of summer in the dead of winter than with a beautiful strawberry shortcake made with organic berries?

7. Grow Your Own

If you want to save the most money on your organic groceries, consider growing your own. Research organic gardening and try your hand at growing your own vegetables this year. By planting seeds, you’ll often be paying pennies on the dollar for the same amount that you would buy in the store.

Going organic doesn’t mean you have to break the budget. With smart shopping skills and a bit of ingenuity, you can buy organic without spending a ton of cash.

It’s easy to disregard your eating habits when you’re young, vibrant and full of life, but how often do you consider how the way you eat could impact your health in the future? Maintaining a healthy diet isn’t just about controlling obesity; what you put into your body now is important to the quality of your lifestyle in the decades to come. It’s easy enough to slip into a sugar-induced coma or indulge in three slices of pizza, but have you stopped to consider what those eating habits are actually doing to your health? Losing weight is not the only reason for making dietary adjustments. In fact, there are numerous advantages to changing the way you eat:

•	Increased energy
•	Healthy lungs, kidneys, liver and heart
•	Regulate sleeping patterns and improve productivity.
•	Overall feeling of well-being
•	Reduced risk of sickness

What if changing your eating habits permitted you to sleep better at night? Get more work done during the day? Avoid catching a cold? All of these goals are easily obtainable and only require making small dietary changes. Eating healthy doesn’t mean eliminating the foods that you love, it simply means finding smarter ways to consume them.

A major motivating factor to changing the way you eat is the almost-instant sense of accomplishment that you’ll feel as you begin noticing the improvements to your lifestyle. While coffee and energy drinks may seem like a gem of a deal in todays busy lifestyle, the truth is that these do more harm than good in your diet. Instead, choose foods that take a natural approach to the much needed energy boost, such as almonds, carrots, salmon or bell peppers.

As convenient as it would be to live off of cakes, fried foods, soda and potato chips, these foods can cause serious problems later on in life if consumed in excess. Even making small changes can have a dramatic impact on the quality of your lifestyle. Try substituting organic foods or using fresh vegetables instead of canned or frozen. Choose Raisin Bran over Lucky Charms. There are an endless amount of substitutions to be made and alternatives to discover if you simply take the time to figure out what your options are.

Late night snacking is a major contributor to an unhealthy eating pattern. It’s not uncommon to sit down on the couch with a snack and enjoy late night television, so don’t think for a second that you’re the only one guilty of this habit. The problem is, it’s not always easy to detect the changes associated with late night snacking. You could be suffering from poor sleep, headaches or aches and pains without even realizing that the culprit is your own snacking patterns. The next time you get a late night sugar craving, try yogurt and berries to satisfy your sweet tooth instead. Not only will you still be able to enjoy snacking, you’ll be setting yourself up for a healthier lifestyle in the process.

How often do you find yourself settling on a pre-cooked dinner? While it is a quick and effortless solution, these meals are often packed with artificial ingredients. Don’t underestimate the benefits of making a meal from scratch. You might just be surprised at the difference in nutrition information of a homemade meal vs. a pre-packaged meal from the grocery store.

Before you overwhelm yourself thinking about all of the foods you might have to give up, take the time to do a little research and find out how you can make small adjustments to your diet for dramatic changes to your health. There are plenty of ways to improve your diet without ever having to compromise on your favourite foods.

The woman today is very different from the woman of twenty years ago. Women in the past lived a very simple (though not necessarily easy) life. They took care of the kids, pleased their husband and ensured that the house was well- managed. This life was very different from how women live today. While they still have to manage the house, the poor economy has also forced women to work outside the home. This makes the modern woman so busy that they rarely have time to take care of themselves. While this may indeed be a reason, it’s not an excuse. Even when you’re too busy juggling things at home and in the office, the tips below will help you pave your way to a healthier and sexier body.

START YOUR DAY RIGHT

Career women are often too busy in the morning. They have to prepare for work and cater to the kids at the same time. No matter how busy you are though, never forget to eat your breakfast. Some think that by skipping meals you will lose weight fast, but this can’t be more wrong. When you starve yourself, your metabolism slows down in order to keep your system going. This means it burns less fat, which of course doesn’t help you lose weight at all. Fitness and health experts actually advice eating small frequent meals during the day if you want to lose weight the healthy way. If you’re too busy in the morning, have an apple while you’re dressing or eat it while driving to the office.

EAT RIGHT DURING LUNCH MEETINGS

One study showed that lunch meetings and stress are some of the causes career women gain weight. You shouldn’t be in a lunch meeting unless you have to talk about something really important. While in a lunch meeting, try to keep stress away since it does contribute to weight gain especially in the areas surrounding the belly. Since in reality there is no way that you can prevent being stressed in a meeting, help yourself by not eating too much. Go for salads, fruits and fruit juice instead of the fatty foods often served in the buffet.

PLAN YOUR DINNER AHEAD OF TIME

How many times have you tried going home late, and have no choice but to either buy takeaway food or have it delivered? These kinds of food are very unhealthy, and that one slice of pizza will no doubt go through your mouth and end up on your thigh. Instead of rushing home to prepare dinner, plan it ahead of time. Have a list of meals prepared from the beginning of every week, and prepare the ingredients the night before. If you’ll have fish for example, place it on the fridge instead of the freezer before you go to sleep so that it’s thawed by the time you get home the next evening. You can also check on the fastest and easiest ways to cook food such as stir- frying. This way, all you have to do is take the food out of the fridge, cook it in ten minutes or so (that’s usually how quick it takes to stir- fry) and have a healthy and delicious meal prepared for you and your family in no time.

Acai berries are the world’s latest and greatest weight loss supplement. Unlike chemical pills and manufactured milkshakes, those on a diet can be reassured by the fact that the Acai berry is, simply, a berry. And as well as possessing properties able to greatly assist in weight loss, the berry is full of other goodness too.

Many health experts have in fact hailed the Acai berry as a super food; it contains a vast array of nutrients that can improve heart health, antioxidants (which are believed to help prevent cancer), as well as fibre, and of course, the properties that help with weight loss.

The primary way in which the Acai berry is known to aid weight loss is through its incredibly high levels of fibre. The freeze-dried Acai powder (a commonly found way in which you will find the Acai berry for sale on Acai berry weight loss sites) contains about 14 grams of fibre in every 100 grams of powder. In comparison, a 200-gram orange contains approximately 3.1 grams of fibre.

It has also been demonstrated that the Acai berry helps to raise metabolism, as well as increasing energy levels. When your metabolism is raised, your body will be more effective at burning calories. In turn, increased energy levels will ensure you are more inclined to exercise, and when you exercise, you will be further increasing the rate at which you burn calories.

Fibre helps the body to cleanse itself and suppress appetite. While of course, eating less is a major factor in weight loss (and the Acai berry will help you to do this), the lighter, healthier feeling you will notice when consuming a fibre rich diet will motivate you to do more exercise and be more active generally. Not only will this help you to lose weight, but it should also lead to a happier and more social lifestyle.

There is a dark side to the Acai berry however. When purchasing Acai berries, you need to keep your wits about you and be on alert for scams. Unfortunately, the weight loss industry is rife with scams. It’s easy to prey on people’s desperation for something, whether that’s weight loss, money or even happiness, and scammers are utilising people’s desires to their advantage in every way possible.

The most common scam used by Acai berry weight loss sites is the ‘free trial’, which is promptly followed by the consumer finding a very large sum of money being removed from their bank each month. Most of these companies will have a customer service number, to reassure you that you can cancel before the ‘free trial’ is up, but rarely will someone ever answer. Ideally, you should avoid any websites offering ‘free trials’, and read user reviews to ensure you are buying from a trusted and reputable company.

Another common scam on Acai berry weight loss sites is related to the product itself. Due to the speed at which fresh Acai berries perish, many websites sell the berry in liquid and powdered form. This means it is very difficult for the consumer to tell how much of the product they are actually getting. While in many cases, these are perfectly viable ways to consume the Acai berry, do ensure you do your research so you know you are buying a quality product.

A preoccupation with healthy diets, especially among women, has lead many food companies to label their products as healthy. They use many variations on their labels, like “helps control weight”, “all-natural”, “heart-healthy”, “low-fat”, or “no sugar added”, ostensibly leading the consumer to believe that what they are purchasing has solid nutritional value that won’t add to their waist lines. However, many of these labels are a little off-the-mark at best and downright deceptive at worst. Here are a few food or beverage items that any self-respecting health nut should avoid.

1. Vitamin Water

Vitamin Water may be one of the most misleading beverages ever sold. The product initially advertised that it helps bring about a “healthy state of physical and mental well-being”, and it predicated its claim on the idea that vitamin-infused water will give you all the nutrients you need. In reality, Vitamin Water is nothing more than sugar water containing synthetic vitamins that aren’t properly absorbed into the blood-stream, and the company got into trouble for its false claims.

2. Granola/meal bars

Many granola and meal bars are implicitly advertised as a quick meal or snack that can be consumed on the go. While it is true that oats accrue lots of health benefits, most of these bars are loaded with corn syrup and chemical ingredients that spike your blood sugar levels, leaving you tired and hungry a short while later.

3. Frozen diet meals

Frozen meals that are marketed as being low in calories, fat, or carbohydrate content seem like a great idea in theory. They are especially helpful for those who are always on the run, and feel that they don’t have time to cook. However, these frozen items are more than likely loaded with sodium, and often don’t contain enough calories or nutrients to keep your hunger satiated for long, tempting you to binge on other foods later.

4. Fruit smoothies

Pre-prepared fruit smoothies, such as those offered at establishments like Smoothie King, or even the all-natural Odwalla or Naked Juice varieties, are good for you in moderation, but there are much healthier alternatives. Pre-packaged smoothies tend to have lots of added sugar, and because they contain fruit that isn’t fresh, it’s likely that they’ve begun to ferment, effectively removing many of the nutrients. Making your own smoothie with fresh fruits and plain yogurt is your best option.

Many companies will try to convince you that eating healthy and losing weight is a complicated process that requires their products. The truth of the matter is that eating healthy basically means sticking to whole, natural foods like fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, and losing weight often boils down to eating regular meals, controlling your portions, and exercising both your body and a little bit of patience. It’s really that simple.

Eating right goes far beyond simply ensuring that you have the right fruits and vegetables on your plate. You also need to pay attention to your vitamin and mineral consumption. When your system develops a deficiency, your whole body suffers. For this reason, you need to ensure that you never become deficient in B vitamins, of which there are nine you should be sure to have. Here’s a list of the nine forms of B vitamin and their properties:

1. Vitamin B1 is Thiamine. It is responsible for helping with your blood circulation, blood formation, and brain function.

2. Vitamin B2 is Riboflavin. It is responsible for antibodies, blood cell formation, and lowering your risk of cataract.

3. Vitamin B3 is Niacin. It is used to help heart patients recover because of its power in helping healthy blood circulation. It also helps you enjoy a healthy nervous system and healthy skin.

4. Vitamin B5 is Pantothenic Acid. In addition to helping you keep your stamina up, it is also important for maintaining healthy antibody levels for a strong immune system.

5. Vitamin B6, also known as Pyridoxine, is a mild diuretic that helps prevent cancer, especially brain cancer.

6. Vitamin B7 is Biotin. It helps control your metabolism and growth at a cellular level.

7. Vitamin B8 is Inositol. It’s a cholesterol fighter that also helps stimulate healthy hair growth.

8. Vitamin B9 is Folic Acid. Often prescribed to those looking to get pregnant, Vitamin B9 is known for its assistance in maintaining energy levels, red blood cell growth, and healthy brain functionality.

9. Vitamin B12 is Cyanocobalamin, which helps extend the lifespan of your cells and fight off anemia and nerve damage.

As you can see, all nine of the B vitamins are important for your health. Don’t ignore any one, and give your body the best care you can to ensure optimum nutrition.
