Ahh—the long days of summer. Basking in the sun and surf, hanging out with friends, hiking, swimming, what could be better? Nothing, as long as you are taking care of your skin in the process. Summer brings exposure to all sorts of elements, sun, wind and water, that are fun to enjoy, but can be damaging to your skin. Here are some tips to keep your skin glowing all summer long.

Exfoliate! Use an exfoliating scrub to slough off those dead skin cells. When those cells accumulate, they give your skin a dull look, and they can block pores, causing blackheads and pimples.

Moisturize. Just because it’s hot outside and you’re sweating, it doesn’t mean that you can ignore this step. Your skin needs moisture, and you need to provide it daily. You may want to use a lighter moisturizer than you do in the winter, but don’t go without it all together.

Shaving. Summer legs, arms and bikini areas mean lots of shaving. Try pulling your skin taut as you shave it (particularly along the bikini line) to help prevent bumps. Also, don’t use plain-old soap to shave with. It’s better and more soothing to your skin to use a shaving gel made especially for that purpose. Gels that contain soothing aloe or moisturizers can be particularly good. In winter, you may be able to get away with shaving every-other-day, but in the summer, it’s a good idea to get out your razor every day.

Wear Sunscreen. You’ve heard it a million times, but that’s because it’s true! Wearing sunscreen (and plenty of it) helps ward off damage caused by the sun. Damage that leads to wrinkles and cancer, neither of which are pretty.

Get a Fake Glow. Since you are (of course!) wearing sunscreen, it’s a little more difficult to achieve that summer glow. That’s where tanning creams come in. Tanning creams have come a long way, and it’s much easier now to find a natural-looking, non-staining formula. Using tanning cream regularly will make your skin look better and help you resist the urge to go out without sunscreen.

Enjoy that summer sun, but take care of your skin—it’s the only one you’ve got!
