If you’re like most people, you’ve probably struggled with procrastination, a nasty little phenomenon that causes you to do everything in your power to avoid doing what you’re supposed to be doing. Even with a deadline lurking, you find yourself playing on the Internet, checking social media, watching television or staring off into space doing absolutely nothing. What causes this, and what can we do to avoid it?

1. Get Rid of Distractions

Distractions are one of the biggest causes of procrastination. If you have important work to do and are worried about your ability to get started, you will want to put yourself in an environment that will help, not hurt. No one is going to be very good at completing a writing assignment if they are sitting in a room with three children playing and the television on full blast. The same goes for being tempted by the Internet. If you repeatedly find yourself on a certain page when you are supposed to be working, consider disconnecting from the internet or moving your bookmarks to a folder that is less easy to access. If necessary, temporarily deactivate all of your social media profiles until you are done with your work. Social media is one of the biggest causes for distraction and procrastination in the workplace.

2. Set Goals and Take Baby Steps

The feeling of accomplishment can be very motivating, and this is why setting many small, easy-to-meet goals may be more beneficial than viewing your project as one big task. Many people procrastinate because they feel overwhelmed with the work ahead of them. By laying out your work in sections, you can feel more productive and less swamped. One way of doing this is to create specific deadlines for each segment of your project. For some, this might not be the answer. Hiring a life coach to help you with setting goals might be in order. If this is part of your “back on track” plan, check out coaching directories like noomii.com, to find just the right coach in a location close to you.

3. Seek Accountability

When you tell someone else about a goal, you will either have to complete the goal, lie to the person or make sure to never mention it around them again. In most cases, you will not be able to get away with the latter option because your friend or family member will ask you about your goal and how you are doing in accomplishing it. For this reason, telling someone about the work you have to do can be beneficial in preventing procrastination.

If you have tried all of these tips and are still struggling with procrastination, it may be time to seek out some help. There may be many different reasons that you procrastinate, from fear of failure to simple boredom. No matter what the cause, procrastination can be a nasty cycle. A qualified life coach will not only be able to assist you in taking on all of these issues, they may inspire you as well.

When you see another individual, within a few seconds based upon the way they look, you will have judged their character and made certain preconceptions about them. This is something we all do without thinking about it.

People will also do it to you, so your appearance can boost you up or let you down and emit messages about you that might not necessarily be accurate. We have all had those moments when we run to the shop looking worse for wear, and we bump into that old school friend and we worry what they will think of us. Really we should care what message we emit all the time, what strangers must think of us by the way we appear. While it’s impossible to be immaculate all the time, when in a professional work environment, there is no excuse.

In business, it’s these quick few initial seconds where we are judged that can secure deals and propel our career. Our business presentation can be important for our future. In meetings and pitches what is said is of course of key importance, but presentation is everything.

Style tips…

Your outfit of choice should represent what you do. If you have a creative job, you should present yourself in a smart manner but also show your creativity in the way you dress, it will be expected from you, and will show others you are the full package.

If you are office based, a smart suit is always a winner, but unusual tailored cuts and accessories can make you stand out from the dreary grey suit crowd and get you noticed. Fellow colleagues and your boss will take note of your efforts.

Power dressing…

Really think how it is you want other to perceive you. Are you the manager seeking more respect? If so, look into power dressing. Power dressing involves sharp clean lined outfits which scream out that you are a confident and responsible individual. Uniforms are designed just for this purpose, police uniforms are designed to make us feel a certain respect for police officers based on their appearance alone. A work based outfit should serve the same purpose, and it may not be your preferred style, but if viewed as a work uniform, your look will come together and you will feel comfortable in it.

Where to start…

Think about the sort of job you have and your career progression aims. If you want people to take you seriously research styles in magazines that you feel look professional and reflect the sort of career you have and have that ‘power’ look. You want your outfit to have a sense of you, so choose outfits that aren’t a million miles away from your character, but remember it is a uniform. If you are unsure, make the most of trying different looks on. Hit the shops with friends and mix together different combinations of styles and get feedback from your friends, they should be honest to give you their true opinion.

It may be a career that involves early starts and long hours, but putting thought into your style can really command respect from others. First impressions are so important, and your thoughts and efforts will pay off. Budget can be tight for most, but there are a range of shops which offer unique clothing which is perfect for the workplace. Take the time to research what is available and what looks good.

You have to work – right? The professional world can be uptight and stuffy. You want to be perceived as a professional woman, but that doesn’t mean you have to dress like a man at the office. You can find some beautiful styles that are professional and cute all at the same time. You don’t have to give up looking good just because you work for a living. And you don’t have to downplay your sense of fashion to be a professional.

Add Some Colour

Too often dressing for work means choosing dull colours. Your entire professional life doesn’t have to consist of being attired in grays, browns and blacks. You can add some colour to your outfits to add a little personality to the office. A great way to add a splash of colour without going overboard and being too flashy for work is to throw on a coloured scarf. Pick a flattering colour with a pretty pattern and tie a scarf around your neck to make any professional outfit pop. You can find scarves in nearly every colour and crafted from a variety of materials. Adding a scarf to your outfit is the perfect way to infuse some personality into an otherwise drab ensemble.

Dip Deeper Into Your Shoe Closet

You probably have more than a few pairs of shoes. Most women have at least a few pairs to go with most colours. Try to liven up your work outfits by dipping into your shoe collection for some more inspiring footwear. If you wear the same styles of shoes every day, you’ll add a breath of fresh air to your standard work attire by switching out your shoes on a regular basis. You probably have a few pairs that have been waiting around for that perfect occasion that just never comes. Why not get some miles onto those shoes by wearing them to work. The stiletto heels may not be the right choice, but you can have some real fun by wearing some less than obvious shoe choices to work.

A dash of colour and smidgen of variety can help you to liven up your work outfits. Just because work can be monotonous doesn’t mean that your outfits have to be.
