Probably the greatest quest for any home decorator is trying to make a room appear larger. Let’s face it, we all want the spaces in our house to appear roomier. There are a lot of techniques that decorators use but there is one all-important tip that is a sure-fire way to make any room appear more spacious. It is deceptively simple and easy to pull off, and can produce dramatic results.

Think Monochromatic

The concept of a monochromatic room makes some people cringe. They immediately start to picture their house looking like a set from a Stanley Kubrick film and get very nervous. Don’t worry, the effect will be dramatic, but not that over the top. The concept relies upon the fact that the more similar you can keep the colours in a room, the less of a visual break or distraction there is when looking at the room as a whole. The end result is a room that can appear much larger than it really is.

Very Easy To Do, But Hard To Commit To

Take a deep breath and think about the following steps. You don’t have to do them all, but the more you do, the better the effect will be.

  • Keep all the paints a very similar colour. This means if you are using a darker colour, you will not use ceiling white, but a shade that is similar to the wall colours. Keep all colours as similar as you can without getting too boring.
  • Furniture should also closely match the colours of the walls and ceilings. If you can’t afford to put in all new furniture, take a trip to the fabric store and make some throws for your furniture that matches the colour scheme of the room.
  • Get rid of anything extraneous. You don’t have to throw out family heirlooms, but if something doesn’t fit in with the colour scheme move it somewhere else where it is more welcome.
  • Eliminate as much extra or distracting colour from the room as you can. This means paintings, shelves and tables. If you must, use coverings and throws to cover furniture and make it match the room’s design.

Take before and after pictures. You won’t believe how this one tip (divided into several steps) makes any room appear much larger. It will take some adjustment, but if you are going for a bigger look, this is an easy way to pull it off.
