It’s no secret in the world of business that often times it’s the biggest jerks who get ahead. Think about your own company, you probably see quite a few guys that aren’t really qualified to lead anything become big bosses or important players. You may have even used some jerk tactics in the past to get yourself noticed on a project. We’re all less than perfect on a regular basis, but no one wants to be remembered around the office as the company jerk. There are some ways to get ahead that work like a charm without requiring you to be a bully in the process.

Keep Your Eyes Open

One of the biggest factors in being successful at work is having a keen eye to see what is around the corner. If you can perceive change on the horizon, even if you don’t like the change, get involved and help to facilitate it. If the big dogs at your company are moving in a particular direction, you can either hesitate and complain about it once it starts, or see it coming and involve yourself to make things run smoothly. Change is going to happen. If you can be the kind of employee who sees what’s coming down the pike and get yourself and your team prepared, you will be more appreciated.

Stop Complaining

One of the worst kinds of guys you can be at the office is the complainer. You know the guy that has something negative to say about everything that happens? Don’t be that guy. Sure, none of our jobs are perfect, but you can’t voice a negative opinion about everything. You don’t have to be smiles and sunshine all the time, but avoid outright complaints. They lower morale and word will get back to your boss that you are complaining nonstop. You don’t want that reputation.

So get involved in changes that are happening at your office and avoid complaining all the time. If you can incorporate these two habits, you will be a more valued asset and have an easier time taking off a personal day when you want to go out and golf instead of sit through another sales meeting.
