Accessorizing Your Look: Choosing the Right Belt for Your Look
Mar 30th
Men’s belts have changed significantly over the years. Who can forget the wide white belts of the 60’s and 70’s? Those days are long gone; contemporary men have belt choices that add pizzazz and style to any look. Although society has adopted a more casual approach towards everyday attire, there are guidelines men should follow when choosing a belt.
Types of belts
Men’s belts are made from three types of materials: calfskin or leather, reptile skins such as snake and alligator, and ostrich skin. Calfskin or leather belts are the most common and are found in virtually all department stores and colours range from black to tan to brown.
Ostrich skin belts are definitely for the fashion forward minded male. These belts have a rough, pock mark look left from Ostrich’s feathers. Ostrich belts are soft to the touch and are available in a wide range of colours. These belts are pricey, the low end is $250.00 and climbs depending on colour and style choices; however, with proper care, they will last a lifetime.
The most expensive belts for men are those made from reptile skins such as snakes, alligators, and lizards. Belts designed from reptile skins are highly sought after and reflect a unique fashion sense. Reptile skin belts literally look like the animal from which the skin was harvested. These belts are the most expensive, costing thousands of dollars, depending on skin choice.
Fabric belts are one of many trends in belts for men and take a man’s ensemble from ordinary to extraordinary. Ideally, fabric belts complement white, beige, or navy slacks and should be worn in the summer.
Other trends in belts include military and camouflage belts, thin belts, cotton belts, and colourful belts. Most of these are for casual wear only.
Selecting your belt
As a rule, men need more than one belt. Every man’s closet should have a belt for dressy, professional attire, and a casual belt for jeans or a sportier look.
When dressing professionally, the rule of thumb is a smooth belt that matches the colour and finish of your shoes. For many men this colour choice is black but it could also be brown or reddish-mahogany in colour. Additionally, these belts should be no wider than your thumb.
Casual belts provide more freedom of expression. These belts come in a variety of styles and colours. They can be leather, canvas, fabric, or animal skin. Additionally, unlike formal belts, they can be paired with a great belt buckle reflecting your own style.
Belts are always a great way for accessorizing a man’s look. They can reflect his personal style or unique interests and hobbies by simply changing a belt buckle. When selecting a new belt, remember to choose a belt that is appropriate for the occasion.
Following these guidelines will give any man a fashionable, polished, chic look.
