Basic Skincare: Are You Aggravating Sensitive Skin?
Working with major skincare line, you often receive a multi-step skincare program. You have a makeup remover, an exfoliator, a cleanser, and a toner. There’s the day cream and the night serum. It all adds up to a very complete skincare program, but it may actually be undermining the health of your skin if you have a sensitive complexion.
While each product on its own may be perfectly useful and helpful to your skin, for sensitive skin types using all of the products in combination can be overdoing it. However, once your basic skin type has been diagnosed at the makeup counter or by an at home consultant, there is very little room allowed in recommendation guides for individual variation. Even the most well meaning skincare advisor may not think to tell you what to watch for in terms of over aggravating your skin.
Some of the common signs of overdoing your skincare routine will be a permanent flush on your cheeks, tightness in your complexion, and pattern dryness around your hairline and in your t-zone. All of these things can be a sign of over-scrubbing, excessive exfoliation, and too many different products irritating your skin. You may also see unexpected breakouts, consistent rashes, or shifts in the general behaviour of your skin.
To combat these symptoms, take a second look at your skincare regimen. It can be a good idea to begin again with only the bare minimum. Check your skin for changes as you gradually add products back in. This will help you pinpoint which products may be irritating your skin, and what the tipping point is for overdoing it with your sensitive complexion. At the end of the experiment, you should be confident that the skincare routine and products you have left are really letting you put your best – and most comfortable – face forward.
