Ways to Honour Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is a yearly, month-long celebration that takes place between September 15th and October 15th, to honour the histories, cultures and contributions of individuals whose ancestors came from Mexico, Spain, South America and the Caribbean.

Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968, as Hispanic Heritage Week and changed to a 30 day celebration under a new American presidency, 20 years later.

Apart from celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month through appreciating the wonderful music, food present in our community, here are a few different ways that you can honour National Hispanic Heritage Month:

1. Support Hispanic-owned small businesses

Shop small and support local Hispanic-owned businesses, this month and after.

2. Participate in a local Festival

In addition, with a quick google search, you’ll be able to find local events and festivals taking place in your home town. You can join in the celebrations or admire and support from the side lines! With the pandemic still among us, there may be a few virtual events happening too, so you can participate from your own homes as well.

3. Watch a documentary

On your next movie night, why not pick a documentary or film that educates you on the past events and cultural significances that has lead Hispanic culture up to this point in society.

4. Visit a museum that highlights Hispanic culture

Virtually or in-person, take a trip to view the wonderful art and history that Hispanic Heritage has to offer and learn about the stories and artists behind each piece.

5. Brush up on your Spanish!

Last but not least, you’re never too old to learn a new language or to practice your Spanish skills from grade school!
