Tell us a bit about yourself:

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to be a designer. I began my career 9 years ago working for a major Canadian fashion brand, which at the time felt very glamorous. But I soon came to realize just how harmful the fast fashion industry could be, and after doing a bit more research, I started to understand the true cost of fast fashion, and decided that I no longer wanted to be a part of it. That decision completely changed the trajectory of my life – and career.
Through my own journey to living a more minimal and sustainable lifestyle, I started to make small changes in my life that led me to where I am today.
What started as a passion project during the pandemic has grown into something bigger than I ever could have imagined. My goal has always been to make women feel as good about the clothes as they do in them, because I believe we shouldn’t have to sacrifice style for sustainability.
And when I’m not working on the brand, you can usually find me sitting in the sun and reading a book, eating olives and chasing the sunsets. And since I have to be so connected and ‘on’ because of my work, when I have the time, I love to get out of the city, leave my phone on airplane mode, and just relax in nature – ideally by a lake or ocean!

Tell us the story behind your brand:

Modern Sunday is a female-founded ethical fashion label that was built around our values of sustainability, integrity, innovation and community. Each garment is consciously crafted in Toronto, and designed to stand the test of time, both in quality and style.Modern Sunday represents a mood, a feeling, a holistic approach to a more mindful and minimal lifestyle. We believe in choosing quality over quantity whenever possible. We believe that you should be able to shop your values without compromising your style, which is why we pride ourselves in creating effortlessly chic pieces using all natural and deadstock fabrics. Our elevated wardrobe essentials are designed to fit seamlessly into your life and your closet. Our brand story started in August 2020 with the goal of making cute, sustainable face masks while reducing the amount of waste as a result of the pandemic. We set out not to build a fashion brand, but to provide a creative and sustainable solution to an obvious problem we saw in the market. From there, we have grown and evolved so much, launching our first clothing collection less than a year later, in May 2021.
Today we have a team of 3 seamstresses, and are stocked in 5 boutiques across Canada. It’s been quite the journey, but we love every minute of it!

What inspires you?

Design inspiration comes to me in so many forms. I find that I notice little details in my everyday life that I’ll save or remember when designing a collection. Maybe it’s a surprisingly beautiful colour palette that I came across in a floral arrangement, or on a mural on a building. Or maybe the writing on a dinner menu inspired a dainty detail somewhere.
Personally, I often find myself so inspired by architecture. Whenever I travel somewhere new, I’m always amazed by the beautiful old buildings that have so much history, and such incredible workmanship. Although Modern Sunday’s pieces are designed to be very effortless and relaxed, I often think of clothing as ‘architecture for the body’, and that translates through to my designs in terms of the proportions, symmetry, and clean lines.
To me, good design is not over-complicated. It’s about bringing out the essential forms in each piece, and being able to translate those designs using luxurious natural fabrics and minimal lines. There is nowhere to hide behind a streamlined silhouette, and to me, that’s the ultimate marker of timeless design.

Where’s your favourite spot to vacation in the summer?

I love being anywhere in the Mediterranean, but I think I’d have to say the Amalfi Coast. It’s just so beautiful, and the food is absolutely delicious. I was lucky enough to spend a week there last August with some girlfriends to celebrate my 30th birthday, and we stayed just outside the main tourist area, which was the perfect spot to relax without being right in the middle of the hustle. Not to mention, it’s the perfect setting for wearing white linen!

What does 2023 hold for your brand?

2023 has been a big year for Modern Sunday so far! We spent some time in Australia at the beginning of this year shooting our full SS23 campaign, which was absolutely incredible. The team was so talented, and being able to bring our vision to life in one of our favourite countries was a dream come true.
In terms of what’s next, we love meeting our customers and being able to give them luxurious in-person shopping experiences, so we’ve planned quite a few popups throughout the summer. We’re also hoping to expand into a new geographical market by the end of this year, or early 2024, so we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to make that happen.
Overall the brand has grown so much this year, which we are so grateful for, and we’re in the midst of figuring out how to sustain our growth without compromising our values of having every garment locally and ethically made by our highly skilled seamstresses in Toronto.
There are lots of other exciting things we have coming up this year, but we can’t share too much about them just yet. Join our email VIPs to hear about all our plans!

Shop Modern Sunday at our pop-up located at Lock and Main Marketplace (17 Lock Street) from Thursday to Monday, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
